In the last few seasons, Bayern Munich have literally assembled a group of Avengers for their midfield. Spanning from a relentless CDM like Joshua Kimmich to a creative maestro like Jamal Musiala, the German club has all the resources to control the pitch in that region. However, Bayern isn’t looking to just bank on these specific resources as they divert their attention to a Liverpool midfielder.
As per sources from TeamTalk, the German side is monitoring Florian Wirtz’s situation at Liverpool. Reports even claim that Bayern is also exploring financial options like wage structure and balance, along with team fit for the 23-year-old midfielder.
Wirtz joined the Premier League club last season for a whopping £116.5M following a successful stint with Bayer Leverkusen, where he even won the Bundesliga. This move to the Merseyside club was supposed to be Wirtz’s career move that could establish him as one of the finest young midfielders in the circuit currently.
However, those dreams faded right after his first season at the club. In his first season in the Premier League, Wirtz struggled massively to cope with the new challenge. Although he scored 7 goals and recorded 10 assists last season, his stint in a Liverpool shirt has largely been shaky and inconsistent. Even this season, Wirtz has recorded just 2 assists in the 8 games he has played this season, as per Transfermarkt.
This is where Bayern Munich is looking to capitalise and land Wirtz at Allianz. Persistent injuries to Bayern’s creative midfielders like Musiala have scarred the team immensely. Wirtz’s move can plug those gaps and add more depth to an already stellar roster. Already equipped with Bundesliga experience with Leverkusen and a Player of the Year-winning season in 2023-24, Wirtz can be a great fit in that midfield alongside Musiala and Kimmich.
His press resistance coupled with his technicality and playmaking would help dish out assists for Bayern’s front three, making him a perfect candidate in Vincent Kompany’s system. Thus, landing Wirtz would automatically elevate the level of Bayern Munich, a team that is already undefeated in the Bundesliga this season.
However, the primary concern for Bayern Munich in this move is that Liverpool FC still hasn’t expressed their desire to ship Wirtz out of the club so far. Even if the Merseyside club puts the German midfielder on the market, his price can be staggering, considering the bucks that Liverpool paid last season.
Although Wirtz’s market value has dropped significantly to £72M (according to Transfermarkt), it will be interesting to see Liverpool’s asking price if the situation arrives at that point. Bayern Munich still hasn’t tipped off any talks with the Premier League club, but we can expect some possible news around this entire fiasco as the winter transfer window approaches.
