Bournemouth change stance on Alex Scott amid Chelsea and Liverpool tug of war

AFC Bournemouth, Alex Scott, Chelsea, Liverpool

Alex Scott began his football journey in Southampton’s youth system, and then Bournemouth snapped him up to add to their academy in 2016.

However, the 23-year-old left Bournemouth in 2017 to join FC Guernsey, and then, after a brief spell at Bristol City, he returned to the club in 2023.

Bournemouth paid around £25M to sign Scott from Bristol City, and he put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the club.

Scott has established himself in the starting eleven, and his performances at the Vitality Stadium have attracted interest from clubs in the Premier League.

Last summer, Chelsea were keen to sign Scott to add more depth to their engine room, but Bournemouth stood their ground and rejected all approaches.

However, things could go in a different direction this time, as Bournemouth could consider selling Scott in the upcoming winter transfer window.

The Cherries’ stance on Scott’s departure has changed following a meeting with his representatives, and now they might let go of him in the event a big offer is made, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

It is believed that Bournemouth are seeking to get around £100M plus in transfer fees to part ways with Scott, who recently made his England debut in the Nations League against the Czech Republic.

Chelsea are still interested in signing Scott, and Liverpool were also keen on bringing him to Anfield to bolster their midfield and provide more depth to the squad.

Bournemouth are currently at the bottom of the Premier League, and Alex Scott is sidelined due to a hamstring injury he suffered while representing England in the Nations League.

Chelsea could revisit their interest in Scott in the winter transfer window, as they were looking for an Enzo Fernandez replacement after he left to join Manchester City on deadline day in the summer transfer window.

The Blues did sign Jordan Henderson and Valentin Barco in the summer to add more depth behind Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, but still wanted another central midfielder.

Besides that, Fernandez was the captain and one of the key players in the starting eleven, and Chelsea will want to get a player of that stature, as Lavia and Barco have not been able to settle into manager Xabi Alonso’s system just yet.

Alonso prefers to play 3-4-3 or 3-2-4-1, which shows that he wants to have a loaded midfield as his system works with central control, high pressing, and positional flexibility.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have a stacked midfield, as they have Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, and Wataru Endo.

Manager Andoni Iraola uses a dynamic 4-2-3-1 or a 4-1-4-1 formation, which shows that he needs at least 4 midfielders to make his system work through short passes.

Scott could fit in both Alonso and Iraola’s systems, as he is a highly technical player who is physically and mentally strong and prefers to play the role of a box-to-box midfielder.

The England international’s best position is in the middle of the park as a deep-lying playmaker, who is tasked with turning defence into attack seamlessly, and also scoring goals from long range.

It remains to be seen whether Chelsea or Liverpool will make a move to sign Alex Scott, who has a £100M price tag on his head.
