In the last couple of seasons, Estevao Willian has been one of the most electrifying names for Chelsea. After his move from Palmeiras to Stamford Bridge for a sum of £29 million, Willian transitioned into one of the most important players for the Blues.
Notably, under Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior, Willian even developed as a starter, playing a crucial part in the team’s offensive production. His stock for the West London club has grown significantly, but this season it took a major hit at the beginning of the season.
Under new manager Xabi Alonso, Willian couldn’t get enough minutes as a starter. The player and his entourage was majorly unhappy with Willian’s situation in the club and Alonso’s approach with the player. Subsequently, transfer rumours began to crop up, with direct Premier League rivals like Liverpool immensely interested in the player as well, and a proposed move in the upcoming winter transfer window in January.
Top European teams like PSG and Barcelona are also immensely interested in Willian after the Brazialian scored 8 goals and dished out 4 assists last season.
However, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano’s latest assessment, those rumours don’t seem to materialize. Romano recently stated that the Chelsea front office isn’t eager to sell the player in January, either on a loan or a permanent transfer deal.
“I told you 10 days ago that there was no transfer alert and no transfer drama around Estevao,” Romano had said via his YouTube channel. “There were no discussions about Estevao going to PSG or Barcelona, or perhaps leaving on loan. The idea was always for Chelsea to continue with him.”
Notably, Estevao Willian’s situation at the club is also seemingly improving at Chelsea. After a brief slump, Xabi Alonso handed William his first start of the season in a 2-0 win against Manchester United. Willian performed decently and took 5 shots at goal during his time on the pitch.
With such a strong impression, Willian’s situation at the club can be expected to improve in the upcoming few weeks. The club’s decision not to sell the player in the winter transfer window also showcases that the front office, including the sporting structure that includes Paul Winstanley and David Follows, trusts the player immensely and will give him ample time to prove himself.
Chelsea’s decision to not offload Willian in the winter transfer makes a lot of sense. The 19-year-old has showcased glimpses of being a prospect for the future.
His explosiveness and elite dribbling skills on the right wing is touted among the best in his generation. Furthermore, Willian’s ceiling as a 19-year-old is immensely high for the future, making him one of the most crucial parts of the Blues’ long-term scheme.
