A Five-Year Aston Villa Deal Won’t Stop Liverpool: Iraola Wants Alisson’s Heir Before 2027-28

Liverpool

Looks like Liverpool are working on getting not one but three possible replacements for Alisson Becker. Becker’s contract will expire by the end of the 2026-27 season, and he is unlikely to extend his contract further, having served Anfield for more than eight years. However, Andoni Iraola is not too worried about it. He is already working with the management to get the right replacement. As previously mentioned, the Reds had shortlisted two goalkeepers for the upcoming season, hoping to secure them within the January transfer window. Now it seems they have seen a third option in Zion Suzuki, the current goalkeeper of Aston Villa. Despite having Giorgi Mamardashvili by their side, it seems that the Reds are far from satisfied. They want someone who can be their top goalkeeper in the 2027-28 season, and Zion Suzuki seems to fit the bill.

As per TEAMtalk, the Reds are actively monitoring the performance of Zion Suzuki. He joined Aston Villa for an undisclosed amount on August 19 this year, though some sources attribute it to a total package of €35 million [which includes the add-on bonuses]. Previously, the Japanese goalkeeper represented the Italian club Parma Calcio 1913, which is part of Serie A in Italy. He played for the club between 2024 and 2026.

However, do the Reds actually need another goalkeeper? As per recent reports, they already have Giorgi Mamardashvili in their squad. Apart from him, another goalkeeper will soon be at the service of Anfield next year. Belgian goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans, who has surprised everyone with his performance at the Belgian club KRC Genk, has agreed to join the club ahead of the 2027-28 season. As such, the Reds are already well-equipped for the upcoming season, with no need to spend extra money for another goalkeeper.

So what makes Zion Suzuki so special for Liverpool? The Japanese keeper is multi-talented. He is a proper sweeper-keeper, with a dominant physical profile. He is capable of initiating attacks and excels in terms of aerial dominance inside the goal box. He is being viewed as a long-term successor to Alisson Becker if the Reds manage to convince him to join the club.

Suzuki has emerged as one of the most sought-after goalkeepers in European football. Except for the Champions League match against Barcelona, the 24-year-old has been mostly phenomenal. This is why he has attracted attention not just from Liverpool, but also from clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, who are also monitoring his performance ahead of the January transfer window.

However, the Villans are not too keen to let him go, at least for this season. They are under no pressure to sell Suzuki, who signed a five-year contract with them when he joined the club in August 2026. Team manager Unai Emery has named him as one of his favorites, since he quickly filled the void left by the absence of Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. Martinez left the club in August 2026 after completing a transfer deal worth £7.5 million with Chelsea. It will be interesting to see if Liverpool continue to pursue Zion Suzuki even after Aston Villa’s reluctance.
