Gameweek 1 FPL Challenge Explained: Rules, Strategy, and Best Player Picks

Fantasy Premier League

With the new season to start underway, FPL Challenge has now become a mainstay alongside the draft and main mode. For anyone new to this mode, this is how it works

FPL Challenge is a different way to play Fantasy Premier League. Instead of keeping the same team all season, you pick a new one every week. Unlike FPL you can make transfers mid Gameweek but as soon as a match starts that player will be locked and cannot be transferred.

Each Gameweek there is a new objective/method to obtain points whether that be double points on Arsenal and Chelsea players, only selecting players from Asian countries etc.

Your league’s scoring will be shown in one of three ways:

  • Gameweek: Your score is for that week only. It resets to zero for the next one.
  • Event: Your score is a total for all Gameweeks in a specific event. It resets once the event is over.
  • Season: Your score is a total of all Gameweeks for the whole season.

You are given a ranking system rather than the score carrying over each week.

It is a fun and unique way of playing FPL, rather than optimising your team, figuring out the fixtures and dealing with injuries. You are given a fresh start each week.

This week’s challenge

You have an unlimited budget and you have to field 6 players. Only one player per club is allowed. The theme is Double points for new signings. For Example :- If Cunha (new singing for Manchester United) scores against Arsenal rather than him getting 5 points for a goal he will get 10 points.

Goalkeepers

From new signings you could play Caoimhen Kelleher, the former Liverpool man has now joined Brentford. The Bees travel to the City Ground and given the amount of shots Brentford face, he could rack up lots of save points. If you want to go for the safer option Vicario is home to Burnley but will not get double points.

Defenders

The two Liverpool fullbacks Kerkez and Frimpong are home to Bournemouth and with the entire Bournemouth defence having been sold this summer, the Liverpool duo to get some attacking returns. Other alternative is Rayan Ait Nouri or Diouf but given the fixture and home advantage it is surely a pick between the two Liverpool fullbacks.

Midfielders

This area is one with a lot of competition, Florian Wirtz home to Liverpool making his Anfield debut, Mohammed Kudus playing at home against newly promoted Burnley and Reijnders away to wolves. With Fantasy having the option to transfer after looking at the lineups you could go for Cherki and Reijnders and if they are not starting, you could go for a Chelsea option in Jamie Gittens or Estevao as they play after the Manchester City vs Wolves match. Taking Mbuemo and Cunha is risky as we do not have any information on how this new Manchester United attack will look like.

Forwards

Joao Pedro looks like the best option from the bunch, he has had a fantastic pre season and should be Chelsea’s new number 9 for the season, although the fixture is not the greatest home to the Community Shield winners Crystal Palace. Viktor Gyökeres and Benjamin Šeško are relatively unknown and we have no idea as to how they will fare. The alternative but no bonus point option are Erling Haaland away to Wolves and Ollie Watkins home to a shaky Newcastle team.

Remember to check the lineups and then choose accordingly.
