Andre Onana Lookalike Shocks Fans With Manchester United Dream

Andre Onana, Manchester United

Andre Onana cannot catch a break these days (neither can he catch a ball).

The Cameroonian goalkeeper, whose mistakes in goal led to Manchester United suffering a damning immediate exit from the Carabao Cup at the hands of fourth-division Grimsby Town (who were later found to have fielded an ineligible player in their line-up) in a historic penalty-shootout defeat, has become the subject of ridicule at Old Trafford.

Needless to say, his presence is cutting a sorry figure at the dressing room, and Ruben Amorim, the beleaguered manager, who has been under fire since the start of his tenure, has removed him from the line-up, choosing to go with Altay Bayindir as No.1 instead.

Manchester United, as a club, has been in a severe, unending fall since the iconic Sir Alex Ferguson called time on his career after winning their 20th League title in 2013.

The club, owned by the very unpopular Glazer family, has spent over £1 billion in the transfer market since Ferguson’s departure, with almost nothing to show for it.

There have been glimpses of a comeback here and there, with success in cup competitions under Jose Mourinho and Erik Ten Hag, along with a short-lived period of mild stability under club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

However, with the advent of a new sporting board and executives under the ownership of Sir Jim Ratcliffe, whose conglomerate INEOS bought a 25% stake in United, things were supposed to look up.

Their hire, Ruben Amorim, the young Portuguese hotshot who dominated the Portuguese Primera Liga with Sporting Lisbon, has had a very difficult time at Manchester United.

However, United have actually looked really good this season, with fresh recruits and a lot of activity in the summer transfer window.

They have dominated the charts in statistics, ranking first in many metrics, from Expected Goals(xGs) to Possession. So you won’t be blamed to think that United is probably doing okay, on the outside.

Except that United currently sit ninth on the Premier League table with a meagre 4 points, are already out of the Carabao Cup after a historic humiliation, and Amorim is probably already counting his days before drafting cover letters for his next job application.

The goalkeeper conundrum has affected Manchester United the most, out of the English Top 6 clubs. In a club with the stature of United, which has witnessed greats like Peter Schmeichel, Edwin Van der Sar and David de Gea, goalkeepers are supposed to be more than just a pair of safe hands.

They need to have a strong resolve, an impactful presence behind their defenders, and an ability to stand up to villainous away crowds. So far, in his couple of seasons, Andre Onana has failed to show any of these skills.

So, when young Nigerian goalkeeper Adebayo Adeleye, who looks suspiciously similar to Andre Onana primarily due to their matching hairstyles, said that he dreamed of playing for Manchester United, fans’ reactions ranged from wary to immediately hostile.

The 25-year-old, speaking on a YouTube podcast, was quoted saying, “Yeah, I think me and Andre Onana look alike, I have not met him yet, but hopefully one day.”

The goalkeeper currently plies his trade for Greek Super League team Volos, and has made 1 appearance for his national team, in 2023.

Onana’s nightmarish time at United might end very soon, as reports have emerged of him signing a year-long loan deal at Turkish club Trabzonspor.

The United hierarchy has already shipped away unwanted players in Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Onana is soon to join that list.

As for Adeleye, we wish him all the best and hope he has a long career ahead of him, but he should be wary of United fans, who would be up in pitchforks if they see him anywhere near Old Trafford.
