Newcastle United‘s Brazilian playmaker Joelinton has always been what you call a ‘maverick’ on the pitch. He is known for his physicality, tireless energy and has a strong combative spirit on the pitch.
He is a midfielder and has a workhorse-like attitude, often tracking back for defensive duties with the same intensity with which he attacks going forward.
He has a strong physical presence on the pitch, which makes him stand out in terms of the aerial duels and 1v1s.
Joelinton has been an aggressive player who does not mind getting into a challenge or two. Thus, he has been involved in some reckless challenges in the past in his career.
Since his time at Newcastle United, some of the notable challenges include the reckless double-footed stud-up challenge into Mohammed Kudus in the Carabao Cup.

He also elbowed Spurs’ Archie Gray in a pre-season friendly.
Another instance was when he brought down Bukayo Saka in the 2nd minute of the game against Arsenal back in September. He has been publicly criticised for committing such tackles and fouls.

The Brazilian caught the eye of the public yet again; however, this time, he found himself at the other end of it.
In the game against Brentford in the Premier League on Sunday, Joelinton got tackled by Brentford’s Dango Outtara, after which the Brazilian could not continue playing for much longer and had to be replaced by Jacob Ramsey.
According to the Sun, Outtara went foot first into his shin after scraping the ball in a 50-50, but his leg was not protected due to his tiny shin pads.

However, instead of getting sympathy for the nasty leg injury he suffered because of the knock, the fans had an unusual response to it.
It’s because of his on-field reputation that Joelinton got a rather unusual and unexpected response and faced flak for his own injury.
One X user commented implying that the Brazilian deserved the challenge because of his own history.

Most of the fans on X were clearly in the anti-Joelinton club –
“Nothing is wrong with that leg…the perfect karma for him and their ilk is a permanent return to League2, where they belong”
“So am not the only who thinks this guy is very rough especially to young players?”
“He deserves a lot more.”
“Contact sport no? Or does that only apply when he’s trying to take out kudus from behind or break Saka’s leg or when he clotheslined a goalkeeper?”
“Read the comments. Every single fanbase despises this thug and we’re all united in hating on him”
Some were amused by how fast the tables can turn –
“The fact that all Newcastle fans like to see him murder people on the field, but it goes the other way around, is actually hilarious”
Some had a sarcastic point of view on Joelinton.
“Joelinton is the prime example of “bad things only happen to good people. Bro is a thug on the pitch, going around hacking down opposition players, rarely gets carded, doesn’t get a serious injury”
