Tottenham Hotspur have continued their poor form from last season as they hang around at 14th in the Premier League table.
The only solace for them is Champions League participation, which was awarded due to their Europa League victory in 2025 final against English rivals Manchester United, despite finishing at 17th in the Premier League.
The victory marked the first major European trophy in the club’s history. But the man behind it is seemingly been removed from the memories.
Brennan Johnson might have gone down as a legend of Tottenham Hotspur, had he continued for years to come. But sadly, things did not turn out good for either parties.
Johnson struggled to gather good performances and had just 4 goals in 26 games. With Tottenham’s season at pendulum it was good for them to make a deal out of a declining Johnson, as they agreed to a £35 million deal with Crystal Palace for the Welsh international.
Nevertheless, what Johnson did for the club is nothing short of extraordinary.
Scoring the only goal in the final, that won the club its first major trophy is something to be etched forever in memory.
But an act of disrespect by Spurs, considering that Johnson is no longer a part of the club, had many people furious and disappointed including the team’s striker, Richarilson.
Tottenham’s training facility Hotspur Way had the celebration of Brennan Johnson after he scored the goal at Bilbao, followed by Richarilson behind him. Along with that a caption “Greatness happens when we are at our best”.
It was a definitive moment and had every reason to be framed in the training ground wall, as it would be the perfect motivation for players to remember to put their best efforts in training.
After his sale to Crystal Palace, when Johnson was no longer a Spurs player, the photo was replaced with a team huddle photo, with the caption “Win together”.
The first one to notice this and disappointed was none other than the club’s own player, Richarilson, who shared via his Instagram story a video of him recording the change of photo with a caption “No more Legend 😢”.
He asks in portugese “Where is Johnson’s photo with me? If its replaced, then it has to be a joke. They have taken us, brother”.
He then reshared an old story of his, where he is displaying the image with a caption “Legend”.
Richarilson’s story had spread the news to every Spurs fan out there in X, who were equally disappointed by the approach.
Certainly, it is a shame to takeaway a player’s image who was a major part of your history, just because he is not playing for the team anymore.
People might leave, the legacy would stay forever, and Spurs did not act like a big club which would understand this.

that is actually quite sad https://t.co/U91hNfXDGt pic.twitter.com/PnUOxLWG2d

While some assumed it to be a Image rights issue, it was irrelevant since the use of the image is not associated with any commercial use but rather something which is normal in every club keeping a portrait of their winning moment.
Errr, just a gentle reminder about image rights…

Brennan Johnson doesn't play for us anymore 😂😂
Someone said it was about image rights. That’s not true. They’re wrong, image rights apply to commercial and sponsorship use, not to a simple team photo celebrating a cup win, which is exactly what this was. Defo comes down to them not being part of the squad anymore.

Serious questions have been raised about the culture, Thomas Frank had said about creating in the team. Its rather seen a regression in the process of creating a winning team.
The culture Thomas Frank is building is focusing on making sure people don’t get too comfortable with the idea of winning trophies?

Added to all the “culture” nonsense Frank talks about it’s becoming clear the club is in tatters
— Keith (@Keith_678) January 15, 2026
well, it’s clear with the appointment of thomas “we will lose games” frank that winning is no longer a part of our culture

The club just did not stop there and straightaway, reassigned Johnson’s jersey Number to their new January Signing, Connor Gallagher.
The English midfielder will wear the No.22 on his back, which was worn by Johnson during his time at the club. This evidently reflects, that Tottenham did not bother about Johnson’s presence or importance and such a treatment was condemned by the fans
After the Jersey 22, now this. Like I said, erasing all Brennan’s footprint. Never fails to amaze me this club.#THFC https://t.co/vMG5NvSVTH

Counter narratives are common, and a set of fans were still in acceptance of this change, behind a bigger mess going on inside the club.
Let’s focus on making new memories, that’s the big club mentality we need.

Although I agree it’s silly to change the photo just because he left the club but the new photo is a much better one as it shows a group of players together vs individuals. After all, it’s the squad that won us the tournament.

Tottenham are on their worst run of form considering recent years. Taking away the only historic moment of the club, would only add up to the blank cabinet of legacy moments with nothing impressive at present anyway.
