Chelsea’s top-four ambitions took a bruising at Stamford Bridge on Saturday as Anthony Gordon’s 18th-minute tap-in handed Newcastle their first win at the ground in 14 years.
Rosenior had declared last month that a successful season “has to be” Champions League qualification, but this 1-0 defeat left the Blues fifth in the table, with rivals Liverpool and Manchester United both ahead of them and eight Premier League games remaining to close the gap.
Joe Willock exploited a ragged Chelsea defensive line, running clear before squaring for Gordon to tap in against the run of play.
Chelsea had dominated the opening period, yet they were caught napping and never recovered their early momentum.
With Chelsea trailing 1-0 at the 45th minute, cameras caught Rosenior sat on his dugout seat and scribbling intensely on his notebook for an extended period. One could also spot him using a multicolour pen.

The notebook on a football manager’s touchline is not mere habit, it is one of the sharpest tactical tools in the dugout.
Jose Mourinho, who spent two spells at Chelsea, was among the most vocal advocates of the practice.

But when it comes to Liam Rosenior, it seems everything turns to comedy.
Since arriving at Stamford Bridge in January, Rosenior has become as well-known for his touchline theatre as for his tactics.
Chelsea’s pre-match centre-circle huddle, which Rosenior credits to the players and backroom staff member Willie Isa, caused controversy at Aston Villa and resurfaced against Newcastle when referee Paul Tierney walked into the middle of it.

When asked about the huddle moment with the referee, Rosenior let off a bizarre response – “My players made a decision that they wanted to be around the ball, to respect the ball.”
Chelsea host PSG on Tuesday in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie, trailing 5-2 on aggregate, before travelling to Everton the following Saturday in the league.
Whatever Rosenior scrawled in that notebook at the 45th minute, he will need the answers sooner rather than later.
