Man City Twitter Turns Hostile Towards Rodri After His Real Madrid Admission
There’s an iconic quote that states, “You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.” Rodri is watching that dialogue come to life right in front of his eyes. The 2024 Ballon D’Or winner is at the tail end of his Manchester City contract. There’s little doubt about the extent to which City depends on the star. He was once the apple of every City fan’s eye, but recently that apple has turned sour. Rodri’s recent bombshell reveal about his footballing future may have turned him into the public enemy no.1 for the entire City fanbase.
Rodri has struggled with fitness since the 2024/25 season. He made a total of just eight appearances that season after struggling with ACL and meniscus issues. Even in the present season, Rodri has made just 28 appearances. That’s a far cry from his first 5 seasons with Manchester City, where the defensive midfielder never appeared in fewer than 46 games. Even though Rodri’s game doesn’t involve a lot of running and instead involves controlling the game (that’s why he’s almost a perfect Pep Guardiola player), the Premier League’s physical demands are starting to take a toll on him.
Perhaps that’s why Rodri’s City future has always been a giant question mark. However, the 29-year-old has now fueled the fire with a bombshell statement regarding his future and possible destination. “I have one year left on my contract; there will come a point when we’ll have to sit down and talk,” Rodri said per Ondacero. Rodri denied when asked about whether he’d avoid playing for Real Madrid because of his history with Atletico Madrid, “You can’t turn down the best clubs in the world.” That revelation has sent City fans on a social media rampage against the player.
Rodri was quite open about the fact that the Premier League demands a lot of intensity. While he has managed it well till now, it won’t be easy to cope with the pressure as he ages. Also, a return to La Liga would mean a return to his home, and that’s something that really excites Rodri.
The vitriol is quite visible throughout the Mancity fanbase, and the message is clear – Rodri is no longer welcome on the blue side of Manchester. While the anger is palpable, the fans have also begun demanding Pep Guardiola to finally go all-in on replacing Rodri with Nico Gonzalez.
The former Porto player is the one whose profile almost matches everything Rodri does for City. Last season, Gonzalez became an emergency replacement due to Rodri’s injury. However, this season, Gonzalez’s minutes have reduced, and that has caused some frustration in the City fanbase. Now with Rodri’s bombshell, the fans are strongly demanding a change of guard in the team.
The Man City fans’ reaction seems overblown, but it isn’t surprising after looking at the team’s timeline since Pep Guardiola’s arrival. The fans have seen David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Kyle Walker, and many other players spend their primes in City. They left only after the physicality of the Premier League proved to be too much for their bodies. However, Rodri is still in his prime, and him looking to leave the team now is hurting the fans.
Now the question is, will City sell Rodri before his contract ends? Or will the team try to hold onto him for another year in hopes of making him resign an extension with them? The City fanbase is ready for the former, and as it stands, so might be Rodri.
