Cristiano Ronaldo and iconic Nike boots are a pair as old as time. Every single football boot he has worn for the biggest stages has all gone on to be remembered and become iconic.
His most iconic ones have, without a doubt, all come from the same line. The Nike Mercurials. Cristiano’s love affair with the Mercurials has been something that has existed since he first stepped onto the pitch in 2004.
From the Vapor IV’s that saw him deliver his more than legendary 2007/08 season for Manchester United

To the iconic Superfly era that we witnessed all throughout his time at Madrid and Juventus.

The boots have forever been a crucial part of his iconic persona. And so it is only natural that fans wonder what the Portuguese would wear in what is set to be his final dance at this year’s Fifa World Cup.
Cristiano’s 2022 World Cup boots were a piece of art, literally. The boots were inspired by a design of Portuguese mural art and featured blue and white highlights all around them.

If we travel back even further to 2018, the boots were designed as an homage to the legendary career the forward had had for Madrid and for Portugal. The Cleats featured a teal gradient and shades of crimson on the studs.

Considering the incredible inspiration behind these boots, curiosity was high, and we finally got information about the boots that Ronaldo might wear at the World Cup.

The boots are a remake of the original Superfly 1’s launched by Nike in 2009. They feature a gold tonal look and also have the cable design running along the side that is characteristic of the originals as well.
The release of these will mark the end of a 4-year drought, as these will be the first boots that Nike will release specially for Cristiano since the 2022 World Cup, and even though they might not be the boots he wears at the final event in July, they definitely do have the last dance feel to them.
The boots also feature the text GOAT on the insole. We’re sure CR7 won’t mind that. The gold shade of the boots is also extremely similar to the boots worn by a teenage Cristiano in his first international tournament with Portugal in 2004. An incredible homage to a legendary international career.

There were other potential contenders that were considered as well, especially with Nike featuring Ronaldo in multiple posts about boot releases, it’s only natural that there was a lot of speculation by fans on Twitter.

However, the main contenders do seem to be the custom gold superfly’s and the original ones that are being “rebooted” by Nike as revealed in a post by Cristiano on his Instagram as well.

Another cause for the speculation around Ronaldo’s boots was the recent 5-2 win against Al Najma. The forward was seen starting the game with the red and silver edition but a goalless first half saw him switch to the blue version. The change clearly had an impact as the second half saw him score 2 goals.

Yet another interesting connection that can be drawn about the boots is how the gold shade of the boots also shares a resemblance to the ones worn by arch-rival Lionel Messi during his dream run in the 2022 World Cup.

Ronaldo fans will only hope that the ending will be the same for Ronaldo as well.
