2026 World Cup co-hosts USA began their campaign in rollicking fashion winning both of their group stage matches.
The USMNT routed Paraguay by 4-1 thanks and followed it up with a 2-0 win over Australia.
While their paths are only going to get tougher from here on with Turkiye up next and the knockout stages afterwards, the brilliant start to the campaign has made the USMNT faithfuls dreaming of a fairytale run, deep in the tournament.
But even the most optimistic of USMNT fans might think twice before posting what James Stephen Donaldson aka Mr. Beast wrote on his social media handle.
The much famed and acknowledged YouTuber demands football to be called ‘Soccer’ if Christian Pulisic and co manage to lift the coveted trophy, a term that is absolutely hated by European, in particular British football fanatics.
Mr. Beast wrote, ‘If USA wins the World Cup WE CALLING IT SOCCER FOREVER! FULL STOP PERIOD.’ , a post that has since gone viral with close to 20 million views on it.

As expected comments flooded in with many taking it upon themselves to burst Mr. Beast’s bubble.
Few joked that in the first place, American football should not be called football at all.
Should be common sense pic.twitter.com/a42DrbOABT

Fans were quick to remind him that the knockout stages will be a different ball game altogether as USA have only beaten medium range teams as of now.
The overconfidence after beating medium range teams

Once u face 1-15 ranked teams, its inevitable to choke pic.twitter.com/tzgidv1ruo
While USA will face another lower ranked opponent in Bosnia and Herzegovina, things could get tougher from there on, as there is a real possibility of facing Belgium, the 10th best team in the World as per FIFA.
Few fans pointed to that very fact and some are very confident that it would be the end of the road there for them.
I’m your dream 😂😂😂 if USA make it semi final I’ll delete my account pic.twitter.com/slwnfWCFKt

Unfortunately….
A random user boasted of his chances of crossing Mr. Beast’s 500 million+ YouTube subscribers count than USA winning the tournament.
There’s more chance of me overtaking you for YT sub count in the next hour! 😉

While few of the fans challenged Mr. Beast in his own game and bet that if they do not win the whole thing, then it should forever be called football. Others were quick to point out that USA winning it or not, changes nothing.
If USA wins, I'll call it soccer… right after pigs fly pic.twitter.com/Kii7BwCPcZ

The whole universe calls it football, your winning won't change the dictionary !
— Ankit (@FilmCriticAV) June 22, 2026
I don't think anyone cares what the United States calls football
— spreen (@SpreenDMC) June 21, 2026
To be fair to the netizens, there are handful of countries apart from USA and neighbor Canada who call football as Soccer, Australia and New Zealand can be the examples but even they mix it up alongside football.
In contrast, the rest of the world calls it football or use their native language to use terms that are close to the word football, like Brazil calling it futebol.

Well, Mr. Beast on his defense could argue that he is not the only one who believes that Mauricio Pochettino’s side could do the unthinkable, as only recently Zlatan Ibrahimovic also claimed that the USA team can win the Cup.
USA and winning world cup in the same sentence? 😭😭😭 pic.twitter.com/OgTIYyPN2d

Maybe getting buoyant by hearing these sort of predictions by some of footballs most knowledgeable persons, Mr. Beast argues his case further and reasserts that USA have a genuine chance of winning this World Cup.
Even if it’s a one in a trillion chance this might be that one universe out of a trillion.

Though there is no doubt that the USMNT posses talent and the right mix of youth and experience in their ranks, however, truth be told, one can not simply judge them until they go through the litmus test of facing the big boys of football and it is exactly where their ‘Soccer’ abilities and World Cup aspirations can gain the certificate of either being a ‘daydream’ or an ‘actual possibility‘.
