Germany‘s Jamal Musiala has undergone successful minor surgery to remove the metal plate from his left foot in Murnau. The metal was inserted after the player horrific leg structure in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
In July 2025, during FC Bayern Munich’s 2-0 quarterfinal loss to Paris Saint-Germain at the FIFA Club World Cup in Atlanta, Musiala collided with the PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma after chasing a loose ball into the penalty area. Musiala planted his left foot firmly into the turf just as the goalkeeper’s massive frame crashed into him.
This sudden, violent sideways momentum forced his lower leg forward while his foot remained locked in the grass, causing a catastrophic fractured fibula combined and a severely dislocated ankle.
The impact was so gruesome that television broadcast networks declined to air replay the footage. Donnarumma was visibly distraught, and Musiala was stretchered off in agony before being flown back to Germany for emergency surgery.

To stabilize the shattered limb, the surgeons at the Murnau trauma clinic affixed a heavy metal plate with supportive screws to Musiala’s left leg.
The surgery successfully repaired the structural damage of the limb. Ultimately, the injury forced Musiala missed 32 matches in all competitions.
But he demonstrated immense resilience by returning to make 24 appearances, with contributing 5 goals and 6 assists despite the metal hardware still anchored in his leg. The implant visibly inhibited his movement on the pitch and some fans noted he lacked his signature explosive agility.

Later, Musiala admitted that he was struggling mentally with the physical sensation of the hardware, which prevented him from playing with complete freedom and confidence.

But on July 2, 2026, following Germany’s Round of 32 exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Bayern Munich executed a long-standing medical blueprint to remove the metal from Musiala.
He underwent a planned, routine surgical procedure at the Murnau clinic to completely extract the metal plate and screws from his left leg. The timing was crucial, utilizing the post-World Cup summer break to ensure the midfielder would not miss any competitive club fixtures during his recovery.
Now free from the physical and psychological constraints of the metal hardware, Musiala is progressing through a structured rehabilitation program at Bayern’s Sabener Strasse facility.
The medical staff of Bayern Munich has mapped out a careful and progressive buildup to ensure he regains full match fitness without being rushed.
The player is scheduled to return to first-team training on July 20, 2026, ahead of Bayern’s Audi Summer Tour of East Asia in August, which will make him available for the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup against Borussia Dortmund on August 22 at full fitness, completely unburdened from his injury with a restart.
Bayern Munich’s official 2026-27 Bundesliga season opens when they face VfB Stuttgart on August 29, 2026.
