Identifying a great opportunity that came with this summer’s FIFA World Cup, streaming giant Netflix partnered up with Gary Lineker’s company, Goalhanger, to create an all-new show called “The Rest is Football”.
Lineker was joined by fellow ex-pros Micah Richards and Alan Shearer on set. The formate was simple – match analysis, expert opinions and unfiltered debate about all the high-octane football action taking place in North America, along with a signature round of “speed darts”.
Following the schedule of matches, new episodes aired daily, and the show proved to be a massive hit, accumulating over 40 episodes and cementing an almost permanent position in Netflix’s daily top 10 TV chart every day – peaking at number one within the UK.
As a result, all parties involved in production of the show have decided to continue their association. On Monday, Netflix posted a clip to X, announcing that the show will continue when the 2026/27 Premier League season begins.

Fresh episodes will begin streaming in August, and this coverage will follow the entire 38-matchday course of a Premier League season.
There is going to be a major change in the scheduling of episodes, however. While daily episodes were necessary to keep up with daily World Cup games, the show will now be dropping new episodes twice a week, every Monday and Friday, which is much more in-line with the traditional Premier League pattern.
Per sources, Netflix and Goalhanger have signed a fresh two-year deal. This also includes coverage for Euro 2028, which is set to be hosted by England and Ireland.
Speaking to Ned Holmes of the Radio Times on Monday, Gary Lineker offered his immediate reaction to his company’s new deal with Netflix.
“We had a brilliant time making the show during the World Cup,” Lineker said. “And the response was incredible, so it’s great to be back on Netflix every week throughout the Premier League season.
“The Rest Is Football podcast will continue across the week too, while the Netflix show gives us another chance to get stuck into the biggest stories.Expect plenty of opinions, plenty of laughs and, with Alan and Micah involved, probably a few arguments as well.”
Lineker co-founded media and podcast production company Goalhanger with Tony Pastor in 2018. Following the theme of “The Rest is Football”, the organization has also produced other hit podcasts such as “The Rest is Politics” and “The Rest is History”.
According to The Guardian, it is currently one of the fastest growing businesses in the UK, reporting over £37.9m in sales in 2025.
Before his days of content creation and entrepreneurship, Lineker also enjoyed an illustrious football career.
A lethal striker who was renowned for his goalscoring exploits, Lineker played for Leicester City, Everton, Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur, before ending his career with a two-year stint at Nagoya Grampus in Japan.
He also impressed during his time in England shirt, finishing as the top scorer of the of the 1986 FIFA World Cup.
