Patrick Dorgu Namedropping Eric Djemba-Djemba Comes Back To Bite Him

Manchester United on Friday revealed their third kit for the upcoming 2026/27 season with a banger video. It was shot at the iconic Salford Lads and Girls Club, from where the minimalist kit has been inspired, and served as tribute to the local community.

The video featured some Lancashire icons such as the rapper Aitch and YouTuber Angry Ginge. However, the highlight was a host of players past and present, such as Bruno Fernandes, Peter Schmeichel, Gary Pallister, and Lisandro Martinez.

Also making a cameo appearance was Danish youngster Patrick Dorgu. Like the others, the 21-year-old spoke of his lasting love for the Red Devils, albeit with an unusual reference.

Dorgu looked dead straight at the camera as he claimed he fell asleep to compilations of Eric Djemba Djemba. Like prodigy Leny Yoro says immediately after in the video, that’s a “deep cut”.

An inheritor of the iconic “so good they named him twice” chants, Djemba Djemba joined United amidst much hype in 2003. The destructive midfielder was signed from Nantes by Sir Alex Ferguson with hopes of succeeding the ageing Roy Keane.

Unfortunately for Dorgu, fans have not taken to name drop warmly. In fact, it has invited a barrage of trolling for the unsuspecting Dane.

For starters, fans are claiming Dorgu’s claim is fiction. There is little chance he was watching Djemba Djemba videos out of all the footballers from the eras gone by.

Perhaps it was a means for the club writers to invoke nostalgia in fans. Afterall, that is the entire theme of the video.

Moreover, Djemba Djemba’s career highlight was simply donning the red jersey. The Cameroonian lasted just two years at the club and made less than 50 appearances for them.

Djemba Djemba moved to Aston Villa thereafter, where he failed to hack it again. The destroyer eventually ended up playing for obscure clubs in countries with barely any footballing culture such as Israel, India, and Indonesia.

But there is one tiny link between Djemba Djemba and Dorgu. The former’s longest stint did in fact come in Denmark at Odense Boldklub, just a couple of hours away from where Dorgu plied his trade at a youth.

Nevertheless, Dorgu’s first two years at United have followed a similar trajectory as Djemba Djemba’s. The left-footer was bought from Lecce for his versatility and ability to play in both defense and attack.

However, his time at Old Trafford got off to one of the worst starts possible. The Nigerian-descent was shown a straight red card on his Premier League debut for an obscene tackle against Ipswich Town.

Funnily enough, Djemba Djemba had endured a similar fate. His reprimand came in a club debut against Arsenal in the FA Community Shield for a now infamous challenge on Sol Campbell.

It should be said that despite his failures on paper, Djemba Djemba did have traits that justified the early hype.

He had menacing upper-body strength and could run for days. Djemba Djemba also had the ability to put in a mean tackle and stop attackers dead in their tracks.

Not to mention a rather first sweet touch and the tendency to score the occasional golazo. A particularly legendary strike came during his time at United itsef, through a first-time long range volley from a corner against Leeds United.

While Dorgu matches the tenacity of his supposed role model, his technical abilities leave a lot to be desired. Fans have been left disillusioned by his decision making when going forward as well as the ability to execute his plans.

Nevertheless, Mancunians will have to take respite from just how good the ivory jersey with maroon and green accents looks on Dorgu. The Dane will undoubtedly be hungry to prove the critics wrong when United begin their season in Yorkshire against Hull City on August 22.
