Dominik Szoboszlai ensured Hungary’s latest gathering did not follow that script.
The Liverpool midfielder and Hungary captain arrived at Hungary’s Telki training center in a white vintage Cadillac convertible, wearing a brown suede jacket, white shirt, flared jeans, boots, and aviator sunglasses. The car was reported as a 1973 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible—a 5.639-meter-long American classic, more than two meters wide and weighing around 2.3 tonnes.
The combination of the vintage convertible and retro outfit immediately stood out. Footballers’ reporting-day looks regularly attract attention, but Szoboszlai’s entrance had a distinctly different feel from the modern performance cars that frequently make headlines around elite clubs.
Twitter reacted quickly.
One post described Szoboszlai as arriving for the international break in an “all-white drop-top Cadillac”, while another said he had brought “20th-century aura” to the Hungary camp. A fan account added: “Hollywood is so lucky he chose football.”
The reactions went beyond simple admiration for the car. Some users focused on the 1970s styling, comparing Szoboszlai to a film star or a rock musician. Others joked about the Cadillac’s huge dimensions and its contrast with the modern supercars usually associated with footballers.
There was also amusement around the more everyday details caught in the arrival footage, including a diaper sticking out of the Chanel bag he was carrying—a detail that prompted playful comments about his life away from football.
It was not only social media making the Hollywood comparison. Hungarian coverage described Szoboszlai’s arrival as resembling that of a movie star, underlining how quickly the images travelled beyond Liverpool and Hungary-focused accounts.
There was also a curious detail in the Cadillac’s recent history. Hungarian vehicle records, reported by RTL, showed that the Eldorado underwent an authenticity inspection on September 16—five days before Szoboszlai reported to Telki. The car was first registered in Hungary in 1996. The timing has raised questions about whether the car had recently changed hands, although the inspection date alone does not establish when Szoboszlai acquired it.
The attention around the arrival should not obscure Szoboszlai’s importance to Hungary’s football plans. He is the national side’s captain and has also assumed greater responsibility at Liverpool this season, having been named one of the club’s vice-captains.
On the pitch, Szoboszlai offers a distinctive midfield profile. He can drop deeper to help progress possession, press aggressively without the ball, carry it through central areas, and threaten the penalty area with shooting, final-ball quality, and set-piece delivery. He has previously spoken positively about the box-to-box midfield role, and Hungary will need that range during their Nations League schedule.
For Hungary, the focus is now on their upcoming fixtures, beginning with Ukraine. But before the tactical work and the pressure of representing his country, Szoboszlai had already given the international break one of its most talked-about moments.
