Tottenham plot shock free transfer raid on Real Madrid to stop defensive rot

Tottenham Hotspur

The Lilywhites have started the season disastrously, sitting in the relegation zone in the Premier League and already knocked out of the EFL Cup.

During the summer transfer window, Spurs invested heavily to strengthen the team in all areas of the pitch to provide more options to manager Roberto De Zerbi.

In defence, Tottenham Hotspur signed Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson, Jean Paul van Hecke, and Tosin Adarabioyo to completely overhaul their back line.

They also lost key members of their starting eleven, such as club captain Cristian Romero, who joined Atletico Madrid and Djed Spence, who signed with Inter Milan.

The transition has not been very smooth, and new captain Micky van de Ven has yet to show his ability to lead the backline and make their defence better.

In six Premier League matches, they have conceded nine goals and are yet to register their first win of the league this campaign.

Tottenham will want to fix their leaky defence, but having spent heavily during the last summer transfer window in improving their backline, they might not sign a defender this January.

But if things do not improve during the course of the season, the club could bring in defensive reinforcements in the next season.

And Spurs are working to find a solution to sign Real Madrid star Antonio Rudiger as a free agent next season, according to TeamTalk.

Antonio Rudiger arrived at Real Madrid from Chelsea in the summer of 2022 as a free agent, and put pen to paper on a four-year contract.

The German international extended his stay at Los Blancos by agreeing to a one-year extension, which means he will be a free agent in 2027.

This term, the 33-year-old has made five appearances across La Liga and the UEFA Champions League, and he has also scored twice.

Rudiger has plenty of Premier League experience, with 133 appearances and 12 goal involvements during his time at Chelsea.

The 6-foot-3-inch right-footed defender is exceptionally strong in the air; he is quick, he is also physically strong, and rarely gets injured.

Besides that, Rudiger had a successful five-year stay at the club and won the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, Super Cup, FA Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Rudiger can play in a back four and back three, and could get into De Zerbi’s team, as the Italian head coach prefers to play in a 4-2-3-1, 3-2-5, or 4-2-4 formation.

De Zerbi wants his team to control matches, dismantle high press, and move above the pitch through fluid counterattacks, which could be done seamlessly as Rudiger is also a decent ball-playing defender.

Rudiger averages passing accuracy of over 93 per cent, breaking defences through long diagonal balls to the wingers, and he also loves to carry the ball deep into the opposition half.

Tottenham will want to get back to winning ways and end the current season with a top-half finish in the Premier League after their poor start to the campaign.

It remains to be seen whether Spurs will be able to bring Antonio Rudiger to the N17 next season to bolster their defence.
