Liverpool FC’s move to sign up Trey Nyoni from the Leicester City youth setup has began to reap flowers. The Merseyside club paid just around £1 million for the 16-year-old back then on September 23 and put him directly in their youth setup. Nyoni played in the youth teams for the club in leagues like the Premier League 2 and the U18 Premier League.
The talent was already there, and it was evident in how he played during those youth years. Legendary Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp even went so far as to say that Nyoni would eventually become a special player for the club. Right after a few years, Klopp’s prediction for Nyoni is seemingly getting real.
Just a year after Nyoni joined the club, he made his senior club debut during an FA Cup game against Southampton. Since then, Nyoni has earned valuable minutes in the senior team for the club, with his role becoming even more profound in the 2026-27 season. The 19-year-old has become a crucial part of the team’s midfield under Andoni Iraola.
Iraola has trusted Nyoni as a definite starter for the club, earning valuable minutes in crucial games against Arsenal and the latest UCL clash against Fenerbahçe. Notably, the 19-year-old even scored a goal in the game against the Turkish team, even though his team initially suffered a 2-3 defeat.
Now, his performances have earned Trey Nyoni a contract extension with Liverpool FC. The Athletic’s reporter Gregg Evans recently reported that conversations between the Merseyside club and the player over an improved contract have reached the advanced stages, with the club seeing him as a long-term prospect for the club.
Notably, Trey Nyoni had already signed an improved contract with Liverpool last year, just after he turned 18. The deal extended his stay at the club till the 2030 season. Now, with more than three years still left in his contract, Iraola’s team has decided to give him an even more improved contract, showcasing their trust in the player.
The club even rejected a £30m offer for the player from Nottingham Forest, which showcases that sporting director Julian Ward completely trusts the player and sees him as a long-term resource. Furthermore, the Merseyside club doesn’t have any prominent deep-lying midfielders.
Meanwhile, Nyoni has fit perfectly into that defensive spectrum for the club. His positioning in the central areas gives stability to the backline, even allowing the full-backs to move forward and pose as offensive threats. On the other hand, the 19-year-old’s ability to receive the ball in deep pockets helps the club in building cleaner plays.
To add to Nyoni’s expertise, Liverpool has also let go of several midfielders in the last few months, including Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones, and Jarell Quansah. It is said that Trey Nyoni isn’t just another prospect for the player, but an option that they cannot let go of at this moment because of their lack of midfield depth besides prominent options like Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Alexis Mac Allister.
