Gossip: Andoni Iraola Turns to Sunderland’s DR Congo Midfielder as Liverpool Suffer Back-To-Back Defeats

Liverpool

Liverpool have suffered back-to-back defeats, first in the Premier League, as Arsenal defeated them in their own backyard, and then in the UEFA Champions League against Fenerbahce, which is managed by former Reds legend Dirk Kuyt.

The Reds spent big last summer to revamp their defence and attack, signing Jeremy Jacquet from Stade de Rennes, Victor Munoz from Osasuna, and Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain.

But they didn’t sign a single midfielder to add depth behind Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Currently, the backup options available at Anfield feature young academy prospects Trey Nyoni and James McConnell, who have impressed in limited game time, but during the course of the season, the midfield could run out of steam.

Nyoni made his first Champions League start against Fenerbahce recently, and he also scored a spectacular volley to give them the lead, but was unable to help his side secure all three points.

Japanese international Wataru Endo is also an option, but he is already in the final year of his contract, and there are no indications to suggest that he will stay at Liverpool after the end of the ongoing season.

According to journalist Ekrem Konur, Liverpool are interested in Sunderland star Noah Sadiki, but could face competition from fellow Premier League side Newcastle United.

However, Sadiki has not only garnered interest from the Premier League, as in Italy Juventus and Napoli are monitoring his situation, while in Spain, Atletico Madrid also remain keen on his signature.

Sunderland signed Noah Saidiki in 2025, after gaining promotion back to the Premier League, and in their first season, secured a spot in the Europa League under manager Regis Le Bris.

This term, the Black Cats have been hit with the reality of the Premier League, as they are currently rock bottom in the table and winless in their last five league fixtures.

In the event that boss Regis Le Bris is unable to change the trajectory of the club and Sunderland are relegated back to the Championship, Noah Sadiki’s future at the club could become uncertain, as several European heavyweights would pounce on the opportunity to sign him to bolster their midfield.

The 21-year-old’s contract at the Stadium of Light runs until 2030, and he is an important member of the squad and has already made 12 appearances this season, so it will not be easy to get him out of Sunderland.

The DR Congo international is not the only player on Liverpool’s radar, as the Merseyside outfit is also interested in Bournemouth star Alex Scott, and the Cherries could part ways with him for the right offer in the upcoming transfer window.

At Liverpool, manager Andoni Iraola prefers a man-to-man marking system in the middle of the park, and midfielders are responsible for fluid transitions from defence to attack with quick, incisive short passes, which requires exceptional physical conditioning, high-speed distance coverage, and relentless pressing.

Noah Saidiki is a versatile player who can play as a central or defensive midfielder and, at times, put in a shift as a right-back; he has decent speed and passing range, while also being physically strong despite his 5 feet 8 inches frame.

Following Liverpool’s recent performances both in the Premier League and the Champions League, Andoni Iraola will want to bring in reinforcements in the upcoming winter transfer window to strengthen the team and make a stronger push for silverware.

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool will turn their interest into a concrete offer and beat off competition from several European giants during the winter transfer window to sign Noah Saidiki.
