Video: Mats Hummels suffers nonaccidental own goal calamity against France

It was another horrible own goal in the ongoing Euros as Mats Hummels deflected a cross inside his own net to score France’s eventual winner against Germany at the Allianz Arena.

The Borussia Dortmund defender became the third player to suffer the fate after Poland’s Wojciech Szczesny and Turkey’s Merih Demiral.

Though, unlike Merih Demiral, whose own goal was a complete accident, Mats Hummels could have done a lot better with his attempt. The Turkish defender had no time or way to react before his own goal, the German had both.

It was a technical error on the 32-year-old’s part but his teammates were equally disappointing. First, Ilkay Gundogan let his man run off him, along with the big hole that Antonio Rudiger left in the heart of the defence.

The French were equally good on their part to enforce the error as it was a fantastic ball by Paul Pogba with the outside of his foot which enabled Lucas Hernandez to make a run from deep.

The Bayern Munich left-back rifled a cross inside the box as Hummels just couldn’t sort his feet out in time, resulting in a calamitous own goal. Check it out below –
