The weekend’s biggest match pitted a gritty Chelsea against a resurgent Manchester United at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League.
The hosts were 4th on the table, with United breathing down their neck at 5th, both teams looking to get a win.
The game was expected to be a tactical affair between new bosses Graham Potter and Erik Ten Hag. And the spoils were shared in a cagey 90 minutes at 1-1 after Jorginho’s late penalty was cancelled out by Casemiro’s injury-time header.
The match lived up to the expectations as both sides looked invigorated to get the bragging rights.
Soon, the feistiness of the game eventually got to Lisandro Martinez and Mason Mount‘s heads in the first half.
The duo shared a heated moment as the two young guns almost faced off before Luke Shaw barged in to avoid an encounter.
In the 37th minute of the match, the Argentine defender fell to the ground while trying to keep the ball in play close to the byline. Mount gave away a foul in his endeavour to steal the ball away from his opponent.
Martinez then gave the Englishman a little shove which triggered him and both of them immediately squared off.
It seemed that the boiling point was reached before Shaw pushed his international teammate away from a feisty confrontation.
Twitter went bonkers as many thought Mount had made a grave mistake in picking a fight with a person who is fondly known as “The Butcher” –
There was also some tame backing of Mount from the Stamford Bridge loyalists as well.
Lisandro Martinez, despite his diminutive stature, has earned a reputation among the Red Devil fans for his aggressive and all-action defending during the matches.
His fighting spirit has been lauded by many and is an attribute that makes up for his 1.75m frame which was deemed to be too short for the Premier League by critics upon his arrival from Ajax.
Manchester United fans had the last laugh as Casemiro’s off-balance header crossed the goal line by millimetres to level the score deep into injury time and come away with a point against The Blues.
The two teams go head-to-head at Old Trafford again for the return clash and we can’t wait to see “Mount vs Martinez” dominate the headlines come April 2023.
