Darwin Nunez is still attempting to get over his ‘impact substitute’ role at Liverpool and become a regular starter under Jurgen Klopp, and it seems that he’s grown a new ponytail to help him find his best form.
The Uruguayan forward started the 2023/24 Premier League campaign in the 1-1 draw against Chelsea on the bench, as was the case towards the second half of the previous season as well. He seems to be lacking some qualities that are needed for him to start over the likes of Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz or even Diogo Jota in the frontline for Liverpool.
The 24-year-old actually had a pretty decent first campaign at Anfield, scoring 13 goals in the matches he started. But there seems to be something lacking in him that holds back Jurgen Klopp from unleashing him in a regular starter role that can constantly partner Mo Salah in the frontline.
It could be due to his inconsistent nature, tendency to miss some big chances or not being able to blend into his high-octane, gegenpressing style as well as the other available forwards. As Nunez aims to work hard on improving the shortcomings in his game, it appears that he has also gotten a new hairstyle to celebrate the start of the latest campaign.
Darwin Nunez debuts new ponytail in Chelsea clash
In the opening game against Chelsea, the 24-year-old came on in the 66th minute to replace Diogo Jota. Now, due to the new injury-time rules promising to stretch Premier League games to well over 100 minutes this season, Klopp’s plan to use an electric forward like Nunez as a substitute might not actually be a bad thing.
It can even help the Uruguayan rediscover his goal-scoring mojo on a consistent basis before he can be phased back into the starting XI. Nunez looked quite sharp in his substitute cameo at Stamford Bridge, having two shots go off-target, but there was something about him that had many thirsting for him.
Fans were quick to notice that the 24-year-old has decided to go with a new ‘ponytail’ hairstyle to mark the start of a new campaign. Soon after coming on in the second half, a closer look at him showed the forward having tied his hair up in a little ponytail.
Fans go gaga over Nunez’s new hairstyle
Nunez seems to be quite conscious about his hairstyle and is also well aware of how many female fans go gaga over his appearance as well. When he joined Liverpool, the Uruguayan also had a long hairstyle and just decided to let them flow instead of tying it up as he’s doing now.
The 24-year-old has tried up a couple of different styles in his career, as he even had a short hairstyle during his time at Benfica. Some fans even wanted him to bring back that short hair look ahead of the start of the campaign.
With that being said, Nunez’s decision to try out a ponytail appears to have been a hit among the majority of the Liverpool fanbase, especially the female supporters. The fans just can’t get enough of how dashing he looks with the new slick hairstyle and wants him to keep this appearance for the campaign.
While Nunez seems to have nailed his hair game, the same can’t be said about his work on the pitch for Liverpool. The 24-year-old definitely has potential to become a goal machine for the Reds, but needs to work hard to eliminate the issues in his game and finishing chances more clinically to be a regular starter for Klopp’s side and help them challenge for the Premier League title.
