Meet Omar Marmoush, the New Resident of Our FPL Town

FPL, FPL Forwards, Manchester City, Manchester City Transfer News, Omar Marmoush

You play fantasy football, right? Yes. Name an asset, which is Egyptian? Md. Salah. Right! Now, name another? Umm ….

The month of January is not the usual time to catch a lot of new entries to the PL (as well as the fantasy league). However, too many shortcomings evident in Guardiola’s team in recent times, meant they wouldn’t be short of incomings this time.

From the first Uzbek player in the league, Abdukodir Khusanov to Vitor Reis coming all the way from Brazil, there was already a major boost to City’s hospital look-alike defence. Now, in a desperate bid to strengthen their attack and replace Julian Alvarez who left for Atletico Madrid last summer, they have landed Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush.

With Nico Gonzalez finalising his deadline-day move from Porto, let’s check the latest Egypt international to ply his trade in the English Premier League. Say hi to Omar Marmoush, City’s £59m coup from Bundesliga.

The former Wolfsburg man has had a breakout season before donning the sky-blue shirt at Etihad. His fiery stint with Eintracht Frankfurt kept the big clubs in Europe on their toes and the scouts on high alert.

Marmoush, who has sung his national anthem 35 times while playing football, has done enough fireworks in the German top-flight alongside the Europa League this season to make City splash money on him. The Egyptian forward has smashed 15 goals and recorded 10 assists from just 17 matches in the 2024/25 season’s Bundesliga.

These phenomenal stats are aided with his Europa League exploits — 4 goals and 2 assists from 6 encounters. DFB-Pokal was also fortunate to witness a glimpse of Omar Marmoush’s statement season — 1 goal and 2 assists from 3 games.

We have seen him being deployed by Pep as a no.10 in both of his PL outings, against Chelsea and Arsenal respectively. Though the latter ended in a disastrous 1-5 defeat at the Emirates Stadium, his debut against Chelsea marked City’s 3-1 comeback win in front of the home crowd.

Marmoush got instant praise from his manager, while City fans showered him with accolades. “He made incredible movements that the players in the middle could not see…” was how Pep summed things up. The evening saw Omar running behind the Chelsea defence as many as 12 times.

Marmoush would be more like Alvarez at City, with a little tweak. He will be used mostly as a no.10, as we could see in his first two PL duties. With Haaland signing a nine-and-a-half-year long contract, he will always be a second fiddle to the Norwegian so far as the no.9 position is concerned.

However, he can be a great option in Fantasy Premier League 2024-25. Marmoush comes with exhilarating pace and sheer distribution. He is also gifted with inch-perfect deliveries into the box and is likely to share the set piece duties. Give a ball inside the six-yard box and Marmoush hardly misses it.

The erstwhile Frankfurt attacker would cost you much less than what cost City. £7m and he is all yours in fantasy football. It seems that he is nailed-on to start and given the form he has been this season, will start delivering FPL points very soon.

While his countryman Salah is a template pick with more than 70% ownership, Marmoush can be a great differential with only 2.8% of the FPL teams having his name on their roster. The 25-year-old forward appears a gem. And we all know what gifted Egyptians can do to FPL leaderboards — run riot through opposition defences and turn FPL league tables upside down along with settling the scores in the PL points table.
