Manchester United’s thrilling 5-4 comeback against Lyon in the Europa League quarter-final on April 18, 2025, at Old Trafford was a match for the ages.
Trailing 4-2 in extra time against a 10-man Lyon side, United staged an improbable rally. Bruno Fernandes’ penalty in the 114th minute sparked hope, followed by Kobbie Mainoo’s sublime equalizer in the 120th minute.
Harry Maguire’s towering header a minute later sealed a 7-6 aggregate victory, sending fans into a frenzy.
Post-match, players and supporters erupted in wild celebrations, with Andre Onana hoisting manager Ruben Amorim in jubilation.
However, the euphoria was dampened by a tweet from Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, who criticized the United players’ exuberant celebrations as excessive.
The polarizing tweet read – “Am I missing something or have Man United won the trophy?! Players, fans & commentators appear to be in tears… Incredible comeback but ridiculous they allowed it to get to that stage #MUFC”

The tweet, which Downie later deleted, drew immediate backlash from United fans.
Supporters flooded social media, accusing Downie of policing their joy and undermining a historic moment.
This is not the first time Downie is being lambasted for raining on players’ post-win joy. His criticism of Scott Brown’s celebrations after winning the treble treble back in 2019 was heavily berated by Celtic fans.
Man United fans argued that in a lackluster Premier League campaign, the comeback warranted such emotion. A feeling later echoed by Downie himself.
Looking ahead, United face Athletic Club in the Europa League semi-finals, with Amorim prioritizing the competition to secure a trophy and Champions League qualification.
In the Premier League, where they sitting in 14th, Amorim plans to field younger players, banking on this victory to galvanize the squad for the 2024/25 season’s remainder.
