Diego Luna etched his name into the U.S. soccer spotlight with a dazzling display that lit up Energizer Park in St. Louis.
Just 21 years old, the Real Salt Lake playmaker delivered two goals in the opening 15 minutes, leading the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) to a 2-1 victory over Guatemala in the Concacaf Gold Cup semifinal.
With the win, the USMNT secured a spot in their 13th Gold Cup final, where they’ll face bitter rivals Mexico in Houston on July 6.
Luna opened the scoring in the fourth minute, reacting fastest to a spilled shot from Luca de la Torre and tucking it away with his left foot.
Just over ten minutes later, he doubled the lead with a moment of magic by controlling a pinpoint cross from Malik Tillman, throwing a defender off balance with a stepover, and curling a right-footed shot into the bottom corner.
The early 2-0 lead hushed a loud, pro-Guatemala crowd.
But the match wasn’t without nerves as Guatemala’s Olger Escobar pulled one back in the 80th minute, and only a dramatic stoppage-time save from Matt Freese ensured the U.S. held on.
While Luna’s on-field brilliance drove the win, it was his post-goal celebration that went viral.

The 21-year-old Real Salt Lake star was already enjoying a breakout tournament, but what followed his second goal made him an instant meme legend.
After rifling a right-footed shot past Guatemala’s goalkeeper Kenderson Navarro, Luna broke into a wild, animated celebration—arms swinging and body bouncing to an invisible beat.
It wasn’t random. It was a full-on homage to one of the most viral TikTok clips of the past year: the Indonesian Boat Race Kid.
The clip features a young boy—dressed in traditional Indonesian attire in black—dancing at the edge of a long, narrow traditional boat during the Pacu Jalur festival in Riau, Indonesia.
His role isn’t just for show. He’s the tukang tari, a kind of rhythmic hype-man positioned at the rear of the boat, keeping the rowers in sync with music, moves, and energy. Check out his aura-farming below –
The boat race itself is the climax of a week-long cultural celebration in West Sumatra that dates back centuries. It’s competitive, communal, and rich with tradition—and this kid, with his over-the-top dancing and undeniable charisma, became the face of it all.
Just like the Indonesian boat race kid, Diego Luna’s joy at the moment is contagious. With seven goal contributions in the tournament—three goals and four assists—Luna has emerged as the heartbeat of a rejuvenated U.S. squad under new coach Mauricio Pochettino.
