The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, with its brand new format, has taken the footballing world by storm. With its new format offering fresh narratives and surprise stars, the tournament has delivered on its promise of excitement.
Among those making waves are two of Real Madrid’s standout performers, the 25-year-old fullback Fran Garcia and the 21-year-old striker Gonzalo Garcia.
Both being products of La Fabrica, Real Madrid’s farm system and academy, the Garcias have been Los Blancos’ shining displays in the defensive line and the final third respectively.

Gonzalo, who had made his first-team debut back in 2023, has experienced a torrential rise to his stocks in the Club World Cup. The 21-year-old netted his first goal for the club during Madrid’s victory against Al Hilal, and then went on to score three more goals in games against Pachuca, Red Bull Salzburg, and Juventus.
He also has an assist to his name which came in the Pachuca game. His performances have come as a sigh of relief for the Madridistas who were longing for the club to sign a super-sub striker ever since Joselu’s move to Saudi Arabia.
Francisco Garcia, on the other hand, has been another Madrid star making a crucial squad position his own. The 25-year-old had long been serving as the deputy to Ferland Mendy at the left-back position, often being dubbed among La Fabrica’s brightest prospects currently in the squad.
However, while rumors of former Rayo Vallecano man Alvaro Carreras being linked with the Spanish giants pointed at Fran Garcia’s future away from the club, a Mendy injury has given the Bolaños native a chance to shine. Garcia, undoubtedly, has grabbed the opportunity with both hands, starring in the left-back position in the Club World Cup.
Garcia has started in all games for Madrid so far, and was named the MVP after Los Blancos’ most recent fixture against Borussia Dortmund in the quarter finals. He scored the much-important second goal for Madrid in their 3-2 victory over the German club, helping the team advance to the semi finals where they’ll be facing European champions Paris Saint-Germain.
While the duo has captured headlines and the hearts of Madridistas with their impressive displays, but they’ve also sparked curiosity on social media for another reason entirely: are they related?

To get that out of the way right away, no, Fran Garcia and Gonzalo Garcia are not related.
Despite sharing a surname and a club, there is no familial connection between the 25-year-old fullback and the 21-year-old striker.
While the speculation is understandable, as both players are academy products from La Fábrica having have burst into prominence during the Club World Cup and sharing the same last name, their connection begins and ends with football.
To clarify, “García” is the most common surname in Spain, akin to “Smith” in English-speaking countries. It’s not unusual to find multiple Garcías in a squad, especially one that draws heavily from Spain’s talent pool. In fact, football has seen similar name confusions before, like the countless Dembélés in France or Traorés in Mali.
Fran García was born and raised in Bolaños de Calatrava, a small town in the province of Ciudad Real, Castile-La Mancha, to parents Jose Luis Garcia and Paula Torres.
On the other hand, Gonzalo García, born to a father who works in the hospitality industry, hails from Madrid itself, where he grew up in the Carabanchel district. Despite sharing the same surname and footballing roots, the two come from entirely different family backgrounds and regions of Spain.
What truly links Fran and Gonzalo is their shared journey through Real Madrid’s youth system.
La Fábrica has produced countless stars over the years, and both players are shining examples of the academy’s continued excellence. As Madrid marches forward in the Club World Cup, Fran and Gonzalo Garcia will be hoping to continue their form and establish themselves as long-term fixtures in the squad.
