Liverpool, the current Premier League champions, have not had the best of starts to their title defence this season. Arne Slot won the 2024/25 league in his first season in charge in England last year.
He, by and large, inherited the squad Jurgen Klopp had assembled and secured the title. However, this season, Slot and Liverpool decided to improve the squad, with the club spending an estimated 449 million pounds.
Including some big-name signings like Isak, Frimpong, Kerkez and especially Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for 116 million pounds. However, the title winners have struggled to maintain that winning form this season with inconsistent performances. Many attribute it metaphorically to the saying of ‘too many cooks spoil the broth’.
Liverpool have looked a mere shadow of what they were last season, and their new signings have not had the best of starts at their new club, which is evident in their on-field performances.
Florian Wirtz came to Anfield with not just a record transfer fee but also with a lot of expectations. However, the German playmaker has struggled in England so far, which has affected the team’s overall gameplay.
Wirtz has been played in more than one position this season by Slot, implying that the Dutch manager still has not been able to get the best out of his new playmaker.
Liverpool faced Aston Villa at Anfield on Saturday. A game which was proving to be a bit more significant than it seemed for the Anfield faithful. LFC came into this game struggling in the league and getting knocked out of the EFL (Carabao) Cup by Crystal Palace.
It was a happy return to the Premier League for the champions in the game, as they won 2-0, through goals by their talisman, Salah and Gravenberch. It was an important victory for Liverpool, one which would take some recent pressure off Arne Slot and place the Reds in the 3rd spot for the time being.
Along with Liverpool getting back to winning ways in the league, it was Aston Villa holding midfielder Boubacar Kamara’s nutmeg on Wirtz that caught the eye of the fans on social media.
The nutmeg occurred in the 89th minute of the game. By that time, Liverpool had already almost won the game 2-0. When Liverpool were trying to attack, that is when Aston Villa’s French holding midfielder Kamara won the ball in his own defensive area, rolled it through Wirtz’ legs and nutmegged him, trying to launch one of the last few counterattacks to try and get his side back in the match.
Fans all over social media couldn’t get over the fact that a player of Wirtz’ calibre could be nutmegged in that fashion. Fans all around had some crazy reactions to the nutmeg.
This fan thinks Wirtz needs to learn a few things again by going back to Germany. Looks like an avid video game lover by his comment.
