For newcomers and even seasoned managers in the unpredictable world of Fantasy Premier League, the appearance of various icons and badges can sometimes be a puzzle. Among the most noticeable is the green star often found next to a player’s name. So, what exactly does this shining emblem signify? It’s a badge of honor that recognizes a player’s top tier performance within a given Gameweek or across the entire season.
The most common context for the green star relates to a specific FPL Gameweek. If you see a green star next to a player on the points page during or after a Gameweek, it means the player is currently in or has made the Team of the Week. The Team of the Week is an ideal 11 player squad, using a valid FPL formation, comprised of the players who scored the highest FPL points in that particular Gameweek. The star is simply a recognition of their high score for the Gameweek, it does not grant any extra points to the player’s score itself.

Essentially, seeing the green star means that for this one Gameweek, you had one of the best performing players in the game on your fantasy squad. In my points page only Haaland has the star which signifies he was the player that made it into the team of the week.

The green star can also appear in a different, more exclusive context when you are selecting your team. If you are browsing the full list of players or viewing your own squad before a Gameweek deadline on the pick team page, a green star sometimes appears alongside a player’s despite not being in the team of the week.
In this context, especially in the official FPL app or website’s player list, the star indicates the player is part of the Dream Team for the season so far. The Dream Team is the ultimate FPL squad made up of the 11 highest scoring players across the entire season (up to that point), within a valid formation. This star is a great quick reference indicator of a player’s season long consistency and value, marking them as an elite fantasy asset.
In my team you can see Timber, Mbeumo, Semenyo and Haaland have the star despite some of them not being in the team of the week. This is due to them being the top points scorers for their respective position and part of the best 11 players in FPL so far in the season.

In conclusion, while the green star itself is a symbolic award and doesn’t magically boost a player’s points total, it is one of the most visible indicators of elite fantasy performance. Whether it’s a stellar single week haul or consistent brilliance throughout the season, the green star marks a player as a true FPL star.
