2 Fan Theories Emerge as Enzo Fernandez Dishes Out Iron Man Celebration Again

Chelsea’s vice captain Enzo Fernandez continues to shine for the World Champions as he remains the player with the most goals and assists for the Blues since the start of 2025.

The Argentinian international remains one of the most underrated midfielders in the Premier League, if not the entirety of Europe as no midfielder has scored more goals in open play than him since the start of last season. He is the only player in the world to be crowned ‘World Champion’ for both club and country.

Over the weekend, during Chelsea’s visit to Turf Moor to face relegation-threatened Burnley, after Pedro Neto made it 1-0 in the first half after a brilliant cross from Jamie Gittens, Enzo scored a goal to put the tie to bed in the 88th minute of the match, guaranteeing his team a 2-0 victory which put them comfortably in second place in the Premier League table.

After scoring in front of the travelling Chelsea fans in the away end, Enzo and the players were not shy to show their passion by celebrating another three point boost in the title race, as fellow teammate and England international Trevoh Chalobah was quick to initiate a celebration that remains close to both Enzo and Argentina fans alike.

One theory suggests that the ‘Iron Man’ celebration done by the midfielder was a respectful emulation of his idol and international teammate, Lionel Messi. The 38 year-old did this celebration a few months ago during Inter Miami’s 1-1 draw against FC Charlotte in the regular season of the MLS at the Chase Stadium in Miami.

Messi placed his hands on his side with his palms down and rose his heels, mirroring a lift-off movement just like Iron Man.

That was part of a string of Marvel themed celebrations done by the Argentinian which were dedicated to his children who are huge fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) superhero franchise.

Messi previously celebrated goals by reaching out for Thor’s hammer, crossing his arms over his chest like the Black Panther and shooting out webs like Spider-Man.

Another theory is that Enzo and Chalobah recreated a picture on his Instagram story, where his 2 year-old son Benjamin was visibly seen recreating a pose similar to the Iron Man celebration done by the widely worshipped Argentina no.10.

The influence of Argentina’s star man is clearly visible on the Fernandez family as this isn’t the first time the Blues’ vice captain has done this celebration.

Rewinding to the start of the 2025/26 season, during Chelsea’s emphatic 5-1 comeback win against rivals West Ham, after then Premier League debutant Estevao’s brilliant and unselfish run, Enzo scored his first goal of the season to make it 3-1 in favour of the Blues. Shortly after scoring, the midfielder hit the Iron Man celebration for the first time as he echoed his idol and compatriot.

It’s a tradition in football to mirror a celebration done by one’s idol as many players have recreated their favourite players’ celebrations after scoring. The most notable recreation of a goal celebration is Cristiano Ronaldo’s iconic ‘Suii’ celebration which has been echoed by players like Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo and Alejandro Garnacho, with the latter being the most enthusiastic imitators of the celebration.
