The 2026 WC draw has topped the headlines for various reasons and strange events that the fans had never seen nor would have expected. Add to that the grouping rules which lead to Uzbekistan’s place in Group K, a question of convenient interest that had people understand as much equivalent to Advanced Mathematics.
FIFA had introduced a rule for the draw of the newly included 48 team format. It said that there cannot be more than one team from the same confederation except for UEFA in the same group.
Uzbekistan’s place in the group came at the expense of the place of Winner-2 from the FIFA playoff tournament consisting of Iraq (AFC), Bolivia (CONMEBOL) and Suriname (CONCACAF).
A series of meticulous placement of teams till the Pot 2 led to a potential decision to prevent further deadlock. But on a layman fan view it made no sense and left fans wondering how and why?

Uzbekistan was placed in Pot 3 and came at the very end of pot 3 draws. Alphabetically group I was the first option with France (UEFA) and Senegal (CAF) already placed. The three left teams in the pot 3 during the time were Uzbekistan (AFC), Norway (UEFA) and Panama (CONMEBOL). Considering the draw rule, the only possibility would have been to place Norway in group I (as two UEFA teams can be in the same group). So Uzbekistan was placed in group K with Portugal (UEFA) and Colombia (CONMEBOL).
The confusion of their placement could be clarified by the understanding of the following outcomes
– Had Uzbekistan (AFC) been placed in group I, Iraq (AFC) could not have been placed in group I if they win the playoff tournament
– Every other group without a team from AFC had been filled with teams from CONMEBOL and CONCACAF, which not only blocked the placement of Bolivia and Suriname but also supports the possibility only Iraq had to win the playoff tournament. y
– The computer that was used to draw would have found a deadlock situation if Bolivia or Suriname win the tournament eventually resulting in a failed draw
Therefore the only possibility was placing Norway (UEFA) in group I and the remaining seat to the winner-2 from the playoff tournament
The abstract explanation of this by Rio Ferdinand during the live “we’ve got factors here, so I’m going to take Uzbekistan and put them into Group K in position three. And we skipped [Group] I because of teams that are yet to be drawn. So we’ll wait for those teams to be drawn in the next pot, so we’re going to have to move on and we’ll wait for them” was not easy for people to understand the outcomes.
Also this apparently served as a source of conspiracies mixed with humour as fans started to claim that FIFA had helped Portugal (Ronaldo) to get an easy group.

The FIFA World Cup draw had its own set of flaws and mismanagement to criticise but the draw had no illegal group draws favouriting specific teams.
