Aston Villa Fans React to Philippe Coutinho’s Kit Snub

Aston Villa, Philippe Coutinho

Philippe Coutinho’s son, Jose Coutinho, celebrated his birthday on December 9, 2025.

His wife, Aine Coutinho, posted the pictures of the party on her official Instagram handle.

The Brazilian playmaker, who is currently playing for his boyhood club Vasco da Gama, threw a celebration for Jose, with a unique dress code: the entire family wore jerseys of clubs which Coutinho has represented over the years.

However, fans online were quick to discover one missing jersey.

Philippe Coutinho himself stunned many by wearing a Liverpool jersey, specifically the 2018/19 New Balance home kit, a bold choice given his abrupt exit from Anfield in 2018.

His wife donned the red of Bayern Munich, honouring his treble-winning loan time in Germany.

His two daughters, Maria and Esmeralda, donned kits from Barcelona and Inter Milan, highlighting his time in Spain and Italy.

The birthday kid and his son, Jose, was seen in Liverpool’s current 2025/26 Adidas kit, further confirming the family’s ties still with the Merseyside club.

But the surprising absentee was the Aston Villa kit, the club which Coutinho joined in 2022 in a high-profile move to reunite with former teammate Steven Gerrard, who was the then manager of Villa.

Coutinho signed for Aston Villa from Barcelona in January 2022 (on an initial loan) and made 43 appearances for the club, scoring six goals. His loan impressed enough that six months later, in mid-2022, Villa made the deal permanent.

In his first full season after the permanent move, he only made 22 appearances in all competitions

However his time at Villa came to an end during the summer of 2025, as he returned to his boyhood club Vasco da Gama on a permanent deal.

This didn’t go down well in Birmingham as many Aston Villa fans expressed disappointment as Coutinho snubbed the Aston Villa kit from the birthday celebrations of his son.

Interestingly though, while the emphasis of the backlash has been about the absence of the Aston Villa kit, some observers also noted that no kits of Vasco da Gama and Espanyol were spotted either.

Simultaneously, the pictures from his (Coutinho) son’s birthday celebration have sparked an unexpected love amongst Liverpool supporters.

Despite his abrupt £142 million transfer to Barcelona in January 2018, seeing Coutinho and his son in Liverpool Red has definitely made Liverpool fans forget about that drama.

For Villa fans though, this obviously really hurts. They supported Coutinho when he was having a hard time, so seeing him leave out their jersey feels like a slap in the face.

It makes them feel like their club didn’t matter to him. While they loved him, it seems he prefers to remember his time at other clubs in Europe.
