2 Reasons Why Phil Jones Telling Kobbie Mainoo to Seek An Exit Was Surprising

On December 15, 2025, Bournemouth held Manchester United to a remarkable 4-4 draw at Old Trafford in a thrilling Premier League encounter.

United started strongly and took an early lead through Amad Diallo, before Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes chipped in with their contribution on the scoresheet as Ruben Amorim’s side continued to lead.

However, United’s defensive mistakes and a lack of game control allowed Bournemouth to stay alive, with Antoine Semenyo and Evanlison exploiting United’s weakness on transition.

Each time United restored the lead, including a goal from Matheus Cunha, Bournemouth answered calmly and confidently. The visitors’ perseverance paid off late on, as Eli Junior Kroupi scored a stoppage-time equaliser that stunned the home fans.

Kobbie Mainoo came on in the 61st minute replacing Casemiro as United attempted to retain the control of the game.

However, Kobbie Mainoo’s 2025–26 season at Manchester United has been defined by relatively limited playing time and mounting frustration. Under manager Ruben Amorim, Mainoo hasn’t started a single Premier League match, starring largely as a substitute and earning just limited minutes across competitions so far.

Mainoo has appeared mostly off the bench and started just once in a Carabao Cup tie against Grimsby Town, totalling only about 183 to 300 minutes across various substitute appearances this season.

Speaking to BBC Match Of The Day, former Manchester United defender Phil Jones insisted that if Mainoo isn’t able to come through the ranks in the current United playing XI, let alone as a substitute, it would be better if he [Mainoo] decides to look elsewhere in the upcoming January transfer window.

“He’s [Amorim] allowed to have an opinion and he’s the Man United manager and he’s allowed to voice his frustration if he doesn’t like what he’s hearing or seeing”.

“But listen, Kobbie is the talk of the town at the minute, should he be playing more? It’s difficult when you bring in Cunha and Mbeumo at the start of the season, who have been so influential for Man United, then you have to drop Bruno down to the six position”.

“Then he’s [Amroim] already stated that Kobbie and Bruno in previous interviews, won’t play together. So it’s going to difficult for Kobbie to play and dislodge”.

“Then there’s obviously talk now about potentially Adam Wharton coming and signing for Man United, who, by the way, I think he’s a terrific player, but if that’s the case, then I think it’s definitely time for Kobbie to look elsewhere”.

These comments weren’t received well amongst the United fanbase as it was bizarre to see a former United player throw a current one under the bus.

The first reason is Phil Jones’ ongoing relationship with Manchester United, which extends beyond that of the ordinary former player turned commentator.

Jones is more than simply an ex-United figure speaking out. He is also a co-host on the club’s official “Inside Carrington” podcast, which is put out directly on Manchester United’s verified social media platforms and YouTube channel.

The second reason why fans were surprised to see Jones talk this way on Mainoo is that in addition to his media responsibilities, Jones had been also working part-time with Manchester United’s academy.

He primarily assisted the Under-18s and occasionally the Under-14s throughout the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons.

During this time, he had been actively pursuing his UEFA coaching career, having already achieved his UEFA A Licence and working towards the UEFA Pro Licence.

Jones received significant hands-on coaching experience on the practice field and on game days, while the club benefited from his presence, perspective, and familiarity with United’s developmental culture.

This proximity to the club is precisely what intensified the reaction to his comments.

For many supporters, this boundary creates the assumption that people linked with official club platforms should retain a more impartial or protective tone, particularly when addressing delicate matters like academy prospects, potential loans, and exits.

Comments that appear to encourage critical narratives or speculative plots might be regarded as purposely feeding rumours, rather than safeguarding young players and the club’s internal processes.

In that environment, the criticism was less about the substance of Jones’s statement and more about who said it, when, and under what affiliations and circumstances, emphasising the higher standards fans hold for those still considered a part of the club’s circle.
