The rise and fall of Dele Alli is a sad story for every football fan who had witnessed the enormous talent he unleashed during his debut season.
At 29, he is far away from where he was expected to be, out of a contract, with his last appearance as a footballer, coming way back in March 2025.
A 9-minute cameo with a red card, did not see him play again for the Italian Side Como and has been out of contract for the first half of the 25/26 season.
But things got worse when fans came across a recent speculation about Dele Alli moving to a League One team.
On Sunday morning, a screenshot of an X post announcing Dele Alli‘s arrival at Wycombe Wanderers surfaced and caught the eyes of internet.
A WW fan, had shared a photo of the Wycombe Wanderers X handle announcing the signing of Dele Alli.

Alli appears with the 25/26 home kit made by Hummel and doing his signature “Dele Alli challenge” celebration. It had a caption which read, “Dele alli has joined on a short term contract until the summer”.
This however was later found to be a rumour, after intense research done by the Chairboys fans.
But nevertheless, the post looked so original, with clear edits and the unique celebration that had people believing he was joining for real. Fans still had a soft corner for him and wished to have made the signing a possibility, to watch Dele Alli play football again.
I wish this were true. He desperately needs a club that can work closely with him, both physically and mentally, and crucially get playing again to build up the self esteem and confidence. https://t.co/950HoUl3dE

It was an AI generated photo by Dan Clarke, to create some fun and false hope, as he waited for people to get baited.
Soon, people realized that a move of that sort never happened and bantered with Dan.

The fan who had started this rumour, Dan Clarke, is a recent addition to the Wycombe Wanderers supporters trust, a fan service group aimed at securing and maintaining fan ownership of the Adams Park stadium.
He works as the website design and marketing strategy head since 2024. But Dan is a fan first and a professional next.

Wycombe Wanderers are 10th in League One, the third tier of English football pyramid.
Its their 4th consecutive season in the league, since their promotion in 2017/18 season and the time for another promotion is far away from present.
But this did not stop Dan, from infusing hopes into their fanbase.
On Friday Morning, Dan posted a similar tweet sharing a photo from Wycombe Wanderers‘ official handle, announcing the signing of Michail Antonio.

Note that Antonio had a near death accident in the summer of 2025. He was released by West Ham eight months after the accident and Antonio had been a free agent since the start of winter transfer Window.
A Premier League experienced striker with good numbers to his name would have been a massive upgrade for Wanderers, who are struggling in League One.
Fans were excited at a signing of that level but the excitement short lived before the facts came into play.

Another attempt of fooling, this time with a Jesse Lingard post, did not work out as fans were ready for the bait this time.

Lingard is currently a free agent, after completing his two year contract with FC Seoul in South Korea in December and is linked with an England return. But playing in the third tier of English football is beyond his own surprise.
Dan clarke added a cover photo of a fan calling him a stupid for having baited him. Tells much about how funny Clarke is.

To put things to an end, he put a tweet about how easily people believe into anything without much research, even if it sounds absurd or unlikely to happen.
I think if this weekend has taught me anything, it’s that media literacy is at an all time low.

I’ve not even put loads of effort in to these. If people believe this stuff, what else are they taking as gospel.
Oh, and for those who are getting proper wound up, go touch grass. https://t.co/DfQF4elguY
The feasibility of having these players is a dream that cannot be fulfilled.
Lingard’s recent salary is reported to be around £1.34 million per year Which is 1/6th of Wycombe Wanderers wage structure.
Lingard was suggested by a United player to join the Championship club AFC Wrexham. But a level below that is nowhere happening
Dele Alli on the other hand, earned £3 million net in his previous contract. Although he needs a club to revive his career, the chances are highly unlikely he chooses a league one club.
