Juventus is in a fierce competition for a spot in the top 4 in Serie A.

After 22 matches, they are 5th on the table with 42 points after a crucial 3-0 victory over Napoli in a must-win match, just 1 point behind AS Roma and Napoli.

The match was crucial, as Juventus was facing Spalletti’s former club, thus setting a perfect stage for performing the “coffee spinning dance,” a celebration beyond football signaling the unity of the club.

How a TikTok trend Evolved into a Ritual?

On 25th January, after Jonathan David scored the opening goal in the 22nd minute, Weston McKennie, Kenan Yildiz, Pierre Kalulu, and Khephren Thuram joined to perform an evolved three-step coffee spinning dance celebration.

The first step of the celebration was the old “coffee stir” performed by David, and in the next step he poured the coffee into the imaginary cups held by his teammate, and finally the entire group cheered their imaginary cup and took a sip from them.

Later, Jonathan David stated that “the celebration was something we thought of today, quite quickly; you serve the coffee and then you drink it together,” symbolizing the spontaneous evolution of the “coffee spinning dance” celebration.

Origin

The “coffee spinning” dance began as a global TikTok celebratory trend started by Alisha Lehmann during her Juventus days. She performed this step in the Juventus women’s locker room just after securing their sixth Serie A title after a 2-0 win over AC Milan.

Jonathan David’s influence

In early Jan in his match against Lecce, he attempted a “Panenka” that was saved by Wladimiro Falcone. The match ended in a draw, and David was subjected to ruthless trolls by the Italian media they labelled him as “arrogant” and “lazy”.

The next week in the game against Sassuolo, he scored a redeeming goal, after which, instead of performing solo celebration he was instantly surrounded by his teammates, led by Khéphren Thuram and they all performed a synchronized “coffee stir” celebration. This situation added soul to the celebration, David, and now it has evolved.

Meaning

In a post-match interview, Khéphren Thuram described the meaning behind the celebration, stating:

“In Italy, we always drink coffee. It’s our ritual. We wanted to show Jonathan that he is part of our ritual, our family. We are ‘brewing’ something together.”

The “Juventus coffee spinning dance,” a.k.a. “coffee stir,” has evolved from a TikTok trend to a symbol of team unity and fraternity that was observed just after David’s goal.

Fan reactions

On X, everyone was excited and impressed by the celebration. Fans praised Jonathan David’s goal and the team’s overall performance, with the celebration becoming the main focus of attention.

Khephren Thuram was praised for his heartwarming statement where he mentioned Juventus as his family, and his participation in the celebration; moreover, people can’t stop but discuss how phenomenal the celebration was.

Many found it impressive how players belonging to diverse cultures—”a Turk, an American, two French people, a Canadian”—came together to perform the celebration rooted in French culture.
