The Limbs In The South Bank When Rodrigo Gomes Finished Off Villa Were Unreal

Aston Villa, Matchgoing Fans, Premier League, Rodrigo Gomes, Wolves

The South Bank at Molineux delivered some incredible limbs on Friday night as Wolves pulled off a stunning 2-0 victory over local rivals Aston Villa. The atmosphere was electric, and honestly, you really cannot blame the fans for going absolutely wild.

Joao Gomes opened the scoring with a fine finish in the first half. Then substitute Rodrigo Gomes sealed it deep into stoppage time, beating Emi Martinez on the break to send the South Bank into complete meltdown. The limbs in that famous stand were something truly special to witness.

Context makes this even more remarkable. Wolves sit 20th in the Premier League, a massive 14 points adrift of 17th-place Nottingham Forest. Survival looks almost impossible at this stage of the season. But none of that seemed to matter on Friday night at Molineux.

The South Bank is widely regarded as one of the best stands in English football. It creates a noise that very few grounds in the country can match. Seeing it go off like that, for a side so deep in trouble, was genuinely brilliant. Chants of “1-0 to the Championship” rang around the ground, but the fans clearly did not care. Derby nights just hit differently.

Rodrigo Gomes after the win –

“It was an amazing win, in a derby. I think we did a very good game, especially second half, and I think we deserved the win. The lads worked so hard to achieve this win and we deserved it.

“We tried to defend because they have a very good team, with very good players, which is why they’re near the top of the table. We tried to defend their actions and to score ours. Thankfully we scored two goals and, of course, it’s a very good win so we need to enjoy it.”

“When I saw the ball there, I just wanted to score. It was a good goal on the transition. I was very tired because I came on and was running a lot, but luckily I scored the goal and I was very, very happy. It finished the game, a derby at home with our fans, it was amazing.

“The environment was very, very good today, the fans did a very good job outside, and I think we did a very good job inside the pitch. We were very happy to give this win to the fans. Everyone knows this season has been tough, but the fans are always with us, every game at home and away. It was very good to give a gift for them.”

“We are playing much better. I think, even at Crystal Palace, we did a good game. We missed a penalty and had the red card, but 11 against 11 we were playing very well and had our chances. Against Arsenal we did a good second half and this game, a win. We are in a good moment, and we need to keep the momentum, keep the work and try to win as many games as possible.”

“It was similar to the Arsenal game. Our second half was much better, and we were growing minute after minute. I think we could feel that the goal was close, and we scored and then at the end. I’m very, very happy. The night was perfect. I like to play in the rain, it was good, and winning like this was perfect.

“We need to keep the momentum, we need to keep working. Of course, here with our fans at home, we have a chance to win the game. We need to focus now on the things that we need to improve, the things that we need to keep working on, and prepare for the Liverpool game.”

Rob Edwards on fans and the game –

“I understand that we have to perform, and a win in a derby game, you’re going to get a good atmosphere. I know it’s two ways and the fans were amazing tonight, backed the players, and when Villa had their periods, they were brilliant for us, making a lot of noise. The end was incredible. It was a special moment in a difficult season. It’s nice to be able to show some emotion and build that connection that we’re desperate to do. That’s why I came here, nights like that, really special moments. That’s a moment that will live with me forever.”

“There was a lot of emotion, and I lost myself for a while. Football can do that to you. I forgot where I was and who was watching. I know it’s been a really difficult season, but if you can’t enjoy those moments, in a really big game, against a brilliant team, then you shouldn’t be in the game. I think it’s right that we all enjoy it.”

“We needed to carry out the plan. Against a team like Villa, who are tactically brilliant and have such good individuals, it’s important you carry out the plan to the best of your ability and when you get it wrong, run really hard and try to defend your goal. When we didn’t get it right, we worked incredibly hard to defend, and when we did, we managed to take advantage of a couple of the moments that we had. I thought we were excellent. We didn’t get everything right in the first half and had to adjust a bit, so we could be better with our pressing.

“I felt like I was looking the right way for a lot of that second half. If they had the ball, I felt like we were in a good place. Once we go 1-0 up the game starts to shift, but in the main we defended really well with brilliant blocks and desire to keep the ball out of the net. I want to be really respectful of how good they are, so to beat them you have to be pretty good as well, and I thought the performance overall was excellent.”
