Jordan Henderson Involved in Post-Match Bust-Up With Bournemouth Staff

AFC Bournemouth, Brentford, Jordan Henderson, Premier League

Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson was involved in a heated confrontation with Bournemouth’s coaching staff after a goalless Premier League draw at the Vitality Stadium on March 3.

Henderson had been substituted after 62 minutes of a frustrating match where Marcus Tavernier twice struck the post for the hosts. In the opening stages of the second half, Tavernier received a precise pass inside the box but saw his shot strike the left post.

Bournemouth dominated much of the contest without reward. Ryan Christie also dragged the ball wide after being played in on goal by Evanilson’s clever pass, attempting to round goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Despite their superiority, Bournemouth could not find the breakthrough. Their nine-game unbeaten Premier League run continued, with the Cherries climbing to ninth place.

The real drama came after the final whistle. Henderson descended from the substitutes’ bench and became involved in the altercation alongside teammate Ethan Pinnock.

Brentford manager Keith Andrews and Bournemouth counterpart Andoni Iraola both acted as peacekeepers, with the pandemonium eventually subsiding into a shouting match.

Andrews admitted post-match that he had no idea what sparked the scrap, while Iraola suggested the disagreement was between Henderson and assistant coach Shaun Cooper.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola speaking to BBC Match of the Day after the goalless draw with Brentford.

“It’s difficult to explain, I think we played really well today, one of the best games we’ve played lately.

“We had good chances but overall we controlled Brentford, a team that plays at a high level. But we haven’t won it. We’ve hit two posts. Ryan Christie had a clear, clear chance. I think the penalty, I still cannot accept [how] we haven’t had a penalty on [Marcus] Tavernier. Somehow we haven’t won, I don’t know how.

“It’s a point. It’s very little seeing our performance and our needs. There are also a lot of positives but probably at this stage of the season you need the points.

“We are drawing a lot of games. Draws don’t get you a lot. Yes we go to 40 and that’s a big positive in the end looking at the big picture. But in this moment after a game we feel the frustration.

“Some draws are fair and you feel it is a very good point for us. Today, no. I cannot accept. I have to defend my players, but I am sorry I cannot accept after the reviews that they say it is not a penalty. He [Michael Kayode] loses his position and stands on the calf of Tavernier. Yes, somehow he finishes, but this is so clearly a penalty. I cannot understand it.”

On the two benches arguing after full-time: “I wasn’t in the mix. I think Jordan Henderson and Kroups [Junior Kroupi] are exchanging words. But nothing happened in the end.”

Brentford head coach Keith Andrews on the goalless draw against Bournemouth at Vitality Stadium.

“I was pleased with a lot aspects of our play.”

“We revisited some of our basics without the ball after conceding three goals on Saturday, and I thought we did that really well.

“There was a real collective resilience without the ball whether we were pressing high or defending our box.

“With the ball, we probably didn’t hit the heights we have done but that can happen, and the opposition obviously have their game plan to try and stop you.”

On Rico Henry‘s first half injury: “It’s a hamstring strain.

“His performances have been of such a high level. It was a shame we lost him so early in the game and hopefully it’s nothing too serious.”

On Henderson fight – “Not really sure. I definitely didn’t start it. I think the game was played with a really competitive edge tonight. It probably spilled over a little bit at the end.”

Brentford captain Nathan Collins on the clean sheet and securing a point on Tuesday night.

“That wasn’t our best performance”.

“But this is a really tough place to come to, they have a really strong squad, the way they play is so aggressive – their style of play, their press, their pace in behind.

“It’s a tough game, so it’s not the worst point.”

“We’ve always had that little bit of grit at Brentford. When it’s not going our way, we can dig in, help each other and defend properly.

“We have goals and assists in this team; unfortunately tonight there wasn’t, but a clean sheet helped us get something.”
