The USA is co-hosting the World Cup this summer alongside Canada and Mexico. Whenever a World Cup has been hosted, the hosts have almost always delivered an incredible performance. Think back to Denis Cheryshev’s heroics to take Russia to the quarter-finals in 2018, or to the Ultimate World Cup opening moment with Tsiphiwe Tshabalala scoring in the opener of the 2014 World Cup with Peter Drury’s iconic commentary.
It’s only right then that the US, too, would like to deliver a performance that will be remembered and talked about by fans for years to come.
The US however are currently on the lookout for the next big goalkeeping talent. They have been a country that has been blessed with incredible talent both in the men’s and women’s teams. Look at names like Tim Howard, Kasey Keller have hallmarked the teams for years, and despite what has been termed as a non-elite department on the rest of the pitch, the US have always had an elite shotstopper in goal.
With the World cup less than 4 months away, the US national team and head coach Mauricio Pochettino continue their search for the next man between the sticks.
For a long time, the answer felt clear with Matt Turner. The goalkeeper was the no.1 at the 2022 World Cup and was the first american to keep 2 clean sheets at a world cup. The stage felt set for Turner to be the next big thing.

However, a move to Arsenal in 2022 saw Turner play just 31 matches at the club level and subsequently fall out of form.
“For me, I don’t see myself as the No. 1 all the time,”
“That’s my mindset going into every camp right now: every inch, every opportunity, needs to be fought for.
Every opportunity I’ve had under this current staff, I’ve earned by my performances in training or the opportunities I had with Crystal Palace.
I never think to myself, ‘Oh, I’m going to come in and play’ or do this or do that. I think everyone can attest to the work that I put in to earn each opportunity I get.
“In terms of pecking order, a lot of guys are performing well, especially the guys here in MLS, so it’s nice to be around them and to keep pushing myself to get better and hold true to the standards of what we want to build on for this national team.”
Turner’s comments are completely valid. The MLS continues to produce incredible talents who are all vying for a shot at the No.1 at an extremely prestigious tournament. The two main talents being NYCFC’s Matt Freese and Chicago Fire’s Chris Brady

All three keepers have been starters for their teams especially since Matt Turners loan move to New England Revolution from Olympique Lyonnais.
The competition promises to be a very close call and we will only truly find out who the final choice will be at the World Cup. For now, the keepers performances in the new MLS season will be their auditions.
However one of the keepers came under scrutiny for their performances.
Fans of the USMNT noted and criticised Matt Freese’s poor performance in the recent MLS match between Inter Miami and New York City FC.
A key moment in the match was when Lionel Messi scored a free kick in the 69th minute to level the score at 2-2 for Inter Miami. A very important thing that was noted s was the poor save made by the NYC goalkeeper.
this is our starting usmnt goalkeeper… https://t.co/OURAjrfQ6s

A majority of fans in the quotes of the tweet criticised the goalkeeper for the poor quality of the save.
The USMNT have announced their preliminary squad, and the main goalkeeper spot will see Matt Turner and Matt Freese for the starting goalkeeper spot.
Other names included Chicago’s Chris Brady and Cincinnati’s Roman Celentano.
The main concerns from the fans arise regarding the fact that Freese’s inability to save a comparatively easy free kick is a bad sign for things to come in the upcoming friendlies and in the World Cup as well, especially with Matt Turner’s past performances being shaky as well.
The USMNT might not even make it out of groups. https://t.co/jWVMpXa1kD

Despite the criticism, many fans also stuck by the goalkeeper and said it was a difficult save due to a deflection on the way to the goal. Many fans also took the chance to talk about how the goalkeeper had also made some impressive saves in the first half prior to the free kick. One Twitter user, Tambi021, talked about not just the deflection but also the fact that many fans hadn’t seen Freese’s performances in teams other than the US. – “The goal deflected off a defender. Don’t act like you have watched Freese outside of the USMNT.”
It deflected. Actually some very solid saves in the first half

Matt Freese’s potential selection has also led many fans to question his place as the starting goalkeeper for the US. This led to many fans asking Matt Turner to return to his starting spot. The 31-year-old is currently playing for MLS side New England Revolution on loan from Olympique Lyonnais. However, he has made 4 appearances for the team in the new MLS season.
nah, i bet turner will be no1

I don't understand how Freese has become out number one keeper. I have never been impressed watching him. Turner is a far better player.

Many fans also seemed to be concerned about the wall set up by the goalkeeper and wondered if that too was one of the reasons for not being selected as the No.1.
I’m more concerned with how he set that wall up. This dude can’t be our starter heading into the World Cup. https://t.co/MPo4rG4iTP

Horribly set up wall too.

There were also a few fans who decided to be a little nostalgic in their choice for the No.1 spot by asking for the return of 47 year old ex US goalkeeper Tim Howard. Howard is cherished by the fans and is most notably remembered for his performance against Belgium in the 2014 World Cup RO16, where he made a record-breaking 16 saves. In spite of the US losing that game, they applauded Tim Howard and even gave him the nickname of “Secretary of Defence.”
Not quite Tim Howard.

This team was very spoiled having Tim Howard. No one even comes close right now.

With the US preliminary squad announced, Turner, Freese and Brady have all made the squad and only the friendlies against Belgium and Portugal will tell who really will be ready and chosen to stand between the sticks for not just one of the but the most important World Cup in the history of the USMNT.
