The Story Behind Rio Ngumoha and Calvin Bassey’s Post-Match Moment

Every Premier League season has a habit of bringing to the surface a new teenage superstar. We have seen players like Cesc Fabregas, Wayne Rooney, Miles Lewis Skelly and Max Dowman come into the limelight in the past seasons. This season’s sensation has, without a doubt, been Liverpool’s 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha.

Ngumoha made his senior debut for Liverpool in the 24/25 season in a 4-0 win over Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup. That appearance made him the youngest player to play for Liverpool in the FA cup.

If his FA cup debut seemed impressive, he made his Premier League debut in the 25/26 season against Newcastle away at St James‘ Park. The winger came on only in the 96th minute at a point where the score was 2-2. What seemed like a sureshot draw ended in absolute fantasy as Ngumoha then proceeded to score a goal in the 99th to seal the 3-2 win for Liverpool.

The winger was once again in the news after his recent performance against Fulham in the Premier League. Ngumoha started on the left wing and made history as he scored the first goal of the game in the 36th minute. The goal was one for the history books as it saw him become the youngest goal scorer for Liverpool at Anfield. The record had stood for nearly 14 years, initially held by Raheem Sterling in 2012.

Ngumoha’s performance drew a lot of praise and eyes towards him after the game. However, the most talked-about point after full time was when the teenager was engaged in a conversation with Fulham forward Calvin Bassey.

The teenager also reposted a story of the two players linking up after the game in the dressing room on his Instagram.

Following this, there were a lot of fans who were curious about the connection shared by Ngumoha and Bassey and how they knew each other.

The main reason seems to be that both Ngumoha and Bassey both used to live in Manor Park, which is a residential area in Newham, London. The Manor park connection was also mentioned in the story reported by Rio and by many fans on Twitter as well. They also came up through the same London based grassroots system at EastSoccerBase.

However, another thing that came to the notice of many fans is the common Nigerian heritage of the two players. Bassey was born and raised in Nigeria and currently plays for the national team as well. Ngumoha, despite being born in England, is still eligible to play for both England and Nigeria. The conversation between the two was seen by many optimistic fans as an effort by Bassey to convince Rio to choose the Super Eagles.

Ngumoha has featured for the Young Lions at U15, U16 and U17 levels, before being fast-tracked into the U19 setup after breaking into the Reds first team. All signs do point towards him eventually wearing the England, however, only time will tell.

Ngumoha’s london history becomes even more clear when we see that Liverpool signed the youngster from Cobham, Chelsea’s youth academy. Even back them, ex-chelsea captain predicted that Ngumoha would go on to become a “top top player.” The praise was further backed up by Ex-Manchester United Center Back Rio Ferdinand who called him a special talent after the Fulham

The praise for Rio Ngumoha has without a doubt been a big factor to show how special the player really is. With this being his breakout season, the teenager is set for big things to come both at the club and at the national level, no matter if he plays for England or Nigeria.

The winger will next be in action on tuesday for Liverpool in their Second leg Champions league clash against PSG, as they hope to overturn a 2 goal deficit at Anfield. Can the teenager once again script history against parisians?
