The United States of America got off to a flying start in the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a resounding 4-1 win over Paraguay in Los Angeles.
Deemed the country’s golden generation, the side would be eyeing to go farther than the Stars and Stripes have ever managed since winning bronze in the inaugural 1930 edition.
The closest US last came to glory was in 2002 when they made it to the quarter finals.
Their fortunes were led by the up-and-coming Landon Donovan, who bagged the FIFA Best Young Player award.
Donovan would go on to play two more World Cups, ending up as the country’s joint-highest goal scorer and assist provider of all time.
While the striker’s iconic career spanned stints with legendary European clubs such as Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, and Everton, the on-field success was not always reflective of his off-field troubles.
Donovan post-retirement admitted to dealing with depression in his playing days, with a particularly ubiquitous male problem plaguing him from an early age.
Since he was a teenager, Donovan has suffered from effects of pattern baldness. The American went from sporting a resplendent mullet in his youth to enduring a rapidly receding hairline.

However, Donovan’s hair managed to stay clear of headlines until a decade after international retirement, only for an unfortunate mishap to propel it into the limelight.
During the Euro 2024 coverage for Fox Sports, Donovan appeared on television with the lower back-half of his hair wiped out.

Donovan later in September 2025 admitted that the mishap was the result of a failed hair transplant – “Since I was 18, 19, 20, I’ve been dealing with that”.
“I tried everything, I tried the hair transplant treatment… nothing’s worked. My options now are [sic] shave it bald, don’t want to do that… Leave it as is, not an option right now. Or I can try the last thing, which is a hair system that is basically a wig, to see if that works”.

Donovan was aware enough to acknowledge he was inviting banter at his own expense with such a post.
Nevertheless, Donovan’s hair is back in the news but for a completely different reason now.
Returning to Fox Sports as an analyst for the 2026 World Cup, Donovan was naturally the center of their coverage for USA’s curtain-raiser.
However, it is Donovan’s improved hairline that truly has caught the fascination of fans who may not have followed the intermittent journey.

The ultimate success after multiple failures had fans seeking the treatment provider themselves, given the drastic results.
Someone get me Landon Donovan’s hair guy! 🤣 pic.twitter.com/mcFV5a1jw9

Donovan’s most iconic moment at a World Cup came in 2010 with a last-minute winner against Algeria after USA were under the pump for large parts of the contest. Yet, his hair comeback perhaps sits atop the charts now.
I've seen some amazing comeback stories over the years in pro sports, but I'm pretty sure Landon Donovan's hairline comeback is the best… pic.twitter.com/B84GF5WRKS

Donovan had revealed he received extensive support from a large number of fans who were suffering from similar problems.
No wonder then that some fans are celebrating the turnaround as a personal victory, and a sign of the good times.

Others took the change as a reminder of just how long they have been invested in the USA’s journey in the beautiful game.

However, not everyone could be won over by Donovan’s do-over. It is indeed a cruel world out there.
Two straight World Cups Landon Donovan is out here looking f*cked up. The hair piece is honestly worse than what he was dealing with before. @landondonovan #FIFAWorldCup #USMNT pic.twitter.com/A0cyra96SB

The raw honesty with which the American has managed being a source of ridicule has set an example for sportspersons worldwide, drawing high praise from all quarters.
Donovan therefore probably does not mind going viral again, this time basking in the glory of a successful hair turnaround.
