Chelsea endured a disappointing 2025/26 season, finishing tenth in the Premier League and failing to qualify for any form of European competition.
Hoping to bounce back to their best, the club have entrusted Xabi Alonso with the keys to their rebuild, signing the former Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid manager to a four-year contract.
Since arriving in London, Alonso has quickly got to work in terms of overhauling the squad.
After acquiring the likes of Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix and Marco Palestra, Chelsea have also signed Danny Welbeck.
Welbeck enjoyed a superb 2025/26 season with Brighton & Hove Albion, scoring 13 goals and providing one assist in the Premier League.
The veteran striker has reportedly joined Chelsea on a two-year contract.
Soon after the signing was announced, Chelsea legend John Terry posted an Instagram story giving the transfer his seal of approval.
In doing so, he also joked about how the Blues will finally be safe from Welbeck themselves, as the West Londoners have been one of the opponents he has enjoyed playing against the most.
“Great signing this. And at least he won’t score against us anymore 😂⚽💙👊🏻,” John Terry captioned his Instagram story.
Over the course of his career, Danny Welbeck has scored seven goals against Chelsea. The first of those came when he was loaned out to Sunderland in 2010.
As the Black Cats faced off against the Blues at Stamford Bridge on 14 November 2010, Welbeck struck in the 87th minute to give the perfect finishing touches to a famous Sunderland victory.
The next time he found the net against Chelsea, he had established himself as a regular for his boyhood club, Manchester United.
In a 3-3 draw between Manchester United and Chelsea which was played on 5 February 2012, Welbeck scored the Red Devils’ third goal in the 50th minute of the fixture. At the time, that goal extended United’s lead to 3-0, but Chelsea actually had the last laugh as they fought back to draw 3-3 and steal a share of the spoils.
After his time at Old Trafford came to an end, Welbeck enjoyed stints with Arsenal and Watford, but he did not score any more goals against Chelsea in that time frame.
Then came his career-reinventing move to Brighton & Hove Albion in 2020. It was during the six years he spent at the Amex that Welbeck truly cemented himself as a true Chelsea nemesis.

In eight Premier League fixtures against the West Londoners in Brighton’s colours, Welbeck scored five times and assisted another two goals.
For Chelsea fans and perhaps John Terry as well, the mere sight of seeing Danny Welbeck take the field against the Blues would have been cause for major concern in the recent past.
Heading into the 2026/27 season, however, those same fans will now be cheering for the veteran to continue finding the net week in, week out.
