What Leeds can learn from Brighton as Bayern circle Tarik Muharemovic

Bayern Munich, Leeds United, Tarik Muharemovic

Tarik Muharemovic was part of the Juventus Next Gen program in his youth, and then he signed with Sassuolo initially on a loan deal in 2024, before making the move permanent in 2025.

Following brilliant performances at Sassuolo, clubs across Europe took notice, and during the summer transfer window, Leeds United came calling.

Leeds United paid around £34M to sign Muharemovic from Sassuolo on a five-year deal to improve their backline under manager Daniel Farke.

Muharemovic’s meteoric rise has also put him on notice in the national team, as he has recently been featuring regularly for the Bosnia and Herzegovina national squad.

This term, the 23-year-old defender has played eight matches, missing a single minute and has also contributed to two goals.

He has improved the backline significantly, as he is good in the air on both sides of the pitch, and he is quick, which helps to stop counterattacks, and he is physical and strong in tackles.

Besides that, he has quickly slotted into the manager’s system and helps to build from the back, while maintaining an 89 per cent passing accuracy, and he has supreme ability to read the game and make clearances, and he is leading in the Leeds United team in that metric.

During the recent international break, Muharemovic played all four Nations League group stage games for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Bosnia and Herzegovina remained unbeaten with Muharemovic at the heart of the defence against Poland, Romania, and Sweden, and he also chipped in with a goal.

Now, top clubs are showing interest in Muharemovic, as his stock keeps increasing due to his splendid performances for Leeds United and the Bosnia national team.

According to TeamTalk, Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich have set their sights on Muharevic, as they want to improve their backline under manager Vincent Kompany.

It has been suggested that Muharemovic is the number one priority for the German outfit, and they could make an attempt to lure him away from Elland Road soon.

Bayern Munich could make a move in the upcoming summer transfer window, but Leeds United are not interested in selling Muharemovic in the middle of the Premier League season.

Leeds United could take a page from fellow Premier League side Brighton’s book, as they have grown into a club which not only sells players for a profit, but also replaces them with quality reinforcements.

Brighton’s owner Tony Bloom is widely recognised as one of the lead factors behind the club’s success in the transfer market, and introduced the data-driven strategy after buying the club in 2009.

Over the years, the Seagulls have signed players on a small transfer fee and then went on to sell them for astronomical fees to bigger clubs, as well as swiftly replacing them with cheaper alternatives and repeating the cycle.

Brighton brought players such as Marc Cucurella, Yves Bissouma, Leandro Trossard, and Alexis Mac Allister, and then sold them to Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, and Liverpool respectively to make huge profits.

Some recent examples will be the sale of Moises Caicedo to Chelsea for approximately £115M and Carlos Baleba to Manchester United for around £70M.

In the event Leeds United decide to sell Muharramovic, he will not come cheap, as the club paid a hefty price to sign him last summer, and he still has four years remaining on his deal with Leeds United, who are not interested in cashing in on him.

However, the Whites could take Brighton’s approach and sell Muharemovic to Bayern Munich while the iron is still hot, and make a huge profit and invest it back in the team.

Leeds United could also use Brighton’s sell-on clause strategy to gain further profit if Bayern Munich sign Muharemovic and then sell him in the future.
