Hands Off DCL: Leeds Reject Manchester United’s Mid-Season Raid

Leeds United

Leeds United have largely emphasized their defense to win games in the 2026-27 season. Behind defenders like Tarik Muharemovic and James Justin, they have conceded just one defeat in the Premier League this season, conceding just 6 goals in 8 games. Their defense has stood out against big teams due to their array of options.

Meanwhile, their offensive firepower is streamlined to just a handful of players. Among them, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is by far the most important for Leeds. After he arrived from Everton in 2025, Calvert-Lewin has taken over Leeds United’s goalscoring responsibility by himself in the last couple of seasons.

The 29-year-old led the goalscoring charts for Leeds last year and is also reiterating the same this season, and has already racked up 4 goals across all competitions. In Leeds’ compact unit, Calvert-Lewin is the focal point of the team in the final third, where he links up with the attacking midfielders and the wingers to turn opportunities into goals.

Amidst this perfect partnership, there have been reports swirling around the circuit about Calvert-Lewin being linked to other teams. The Athletic recently reported that Manchester United is taking an interest in signing Calvert-Lewin in the winter transfer window in January.

The timing of this entire fiasco makes complete sense. United’s first-choice striker, Benjamin Sesko, is out for a long overhaul owing to a knee injury. In this precarious situation, United has set their eyes on Calvert-Lewin, a player who has spent the majority of his career in the Premier League and is experienced with the style of game played here.

Besides, Calvert-Lewin has kind of rediscovered himself after his move to Leeds. The 29-year-old striker’s defensive pressing, off-the-ball movements, aerial prowess, and finishing capabilities will definitely make him a perfect fit for Michael Carrick’s Manchester United, which is winless in the last 8 games across all competitions.

While United’s interest in the player is quite understandable, Leeds doesn’t seem to be letting go of the player. Beren Cross, Leeds beat writer for The Athletic, even shared this on X. “Almost goes without saying, but I don’t see how selling would make any sense for Leeds,” his statement read.

Tom McDermott, who is a member of the Football Writers’ Association, has also claimed that Leeds isn’t considering selling Dominic Calvert-Lewin at least in the winter transfer window. Sporting director Adam Underwood has had a massive admiration for the striker even before the player’s move to the club last year.

Calvert-Lewin’s current contract with Leeds expires in 2028, but reports suggest that the club is considering locking up the player even beyond that, given the skill set he offers and the numbers he has been producing. Another important element that contributes to Leeds’ refusal to sell the player is their thin depth in attacking options.

Behind Calvert-Lewin, Leeds only have Lukas Nmecha in their ranks to fulfill that striker position. Thus, giving away the team’s most important offensive player mid-season to a direct league rival wouldn’t be a lame move that Leeds would make in January. With the transfer window just a couple of months away, we can get an even more clearer outlook around this move.
