Gossip: Chelsea’s Response After Liverpool Show Interest in £80M Levi Colwill

Chelsea, Levi Colwill

Chelsea have a problem on their hands. However, it’s not due to their performance in the 2026-27 Premier League. In fact, the Blues have been performing way better than the previous season. The Blues are currently placed fourth in the League table, having defeated Manchester United in their previous clash held on October 31. They lost a chance to enter the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup [also known as the Carabao Cup] by a whisker.

However, team coach Xabi Alonso is hopeful that the Blues will do well this season, particularly in the Premier League. The only thing he is concerned about is the position of centre-back Levi Colwill. As per TEAMtalk, Liverpool is now showing interest in the 23-year-old centre-back. Team manager Andoni Iraola currently needs a defender who could be a potential successor to the current skipper Virgil van Dijk. In fact, Colwill has led Chelsea on multiple occasions, which further makes him a credible option for the Reds ahead of the January transfer window.

However, the Blues are equally determined to not let him go. Even if the Reds manage to make a suitable offer, Chelsea have valued the England player at a whopping £80 million, which will make things tough. The Blues view Colwill as an essential part of their long-term plans and will not let him go under any circumstances, especially during the 2026-27 season.

Interestingly, this is not the first time Chelsea faced such a situation with Colwill. When he was playing for Brighton & Hove Albion on loan, the Seagulls were so impressed by his work that they offered him a permanent deal with the club. Tottenham Hotspur were also linked with the centre-back at that time, although they didn’t make an official bid at that time. However, Chelsea immediately put their foot down, refusing to accept the potential transfer.

The Blues previously signed a six-year contract with Colwill in 2023, when he rejoined the club after two loan spells with Huddersfield Town and Brighton & Hove Albion, respectively. Now the management is keen on extending his contract further. Colwill is one of the favorites of team manager Xabi Alonso. He recently teamed up with Morgan Rogers to put up a solid defence in the game against Manchester United, denying them crucial goal-scoring opportunities. Manchester United eventually won the match 2-0.

But what makes Colwill so special for Chelsea? The 23-year-old is capable of playing out from the back and has the proper experience of competing at the highest level. Not many know this, but he also assisted Cole Palmer’s opening goal in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup final against Paris Saint-Germain. Chelsea eventually won the final 3-0. Apart from that, Colwill is also a gifted player who keeps his cool in intense, high-pressure situations. He knows very well how to force the opponent’s defensive lines to collapse and give the perfect opportunities to score goals. This is why Chelsea are determined to retain Colwill. Despite his age, he possesses all the qualities required to become the top defender for the Blues.
