In the latest episode of Behind the Crest, the U.S. Men’s National Team’s behind-the-scenes docuseries, fans were treated to more than just post-match celebrations.
A single, cheeky moment from veteran defender Tim Ream has sparked a wave of speculation online — was he taking a playful shot at former coach Gregg Berhalter?
The clip shows Ream casually tossing a football behind his back to teammate Sebastian Berhalter — the son of none other than Gregg himself. It happened during the USMNT dressing room celebrations after their dramatic Gold Cup quarterfinal win over Costa Rica on June 30.

To the untrained eye, it might seem like nothing. But for longtime USMNT watchers, it immediately struck a chord.
When Berhalter was in charge from 2018 to 2024, fans famously noticed his habit of delivering behind-the-back passes to players during games.
He even gave a full presentation on the technique during his tenure, arguing it helped speed up transitions and added unpredictability — part of his wider “bounce pass” obsession that became a recurring talking point, and sometimes punchline, among supporters.
So when Ream pulled off the same behind-the-back pass — to Gregg’s son, no less — fans on X ran wild.
“Getting trolled for something your dad does must suck.,” one post read. Another joked, “You can take the team away from Gregg Berhalter but you can’t take the Gregg Berhalter out of the team!”.
