Sir Alex Ferguson is considered by many pundits, footballers, ex footballers and experts to be the greatest head coach, not only in the history of English football, but in football in general. His tactics, vision, approach, and commanding presence are unmatched, and long before he retired, everyone knew that whoever took his place after his retirement would carry a huge burden given all of Ferguson’s achievements during his time with Manchester United. He single-handedly made Manchester United the greatest British football team of his era, and one of the best football clubs in the whole world. But unfortunately, everything in this life has an end.
After his retirement in 2013, the year in which he gave Manchester United their last Premier League title, everyone who had the opportunity to manage this team suffered greatly due to bad decisions, poor form of the players, or simply bad luck or because not everyone was prepared for such a responsibility. Currently, Manchester United’s head coach is Portuguese Ruben Amorim, who replaced Dutchman Erik Ten Hag who had a terrible time at the club.
And the truth is that Amorim is also doing so badly that they started creating memes about him and there is a recent one that came out after the Manchester United match against Grimsby Town. At one point during the match, the camera focuses on Amorim, soaked and sitting, reviewing his tactics board as he looked for ways to reverse the result while the match was 2-0 in favor of Grimsby Town.

That image of Amorim with his board generated a ton of memes about it that thousands of English football fans posted on Twitter (now X) in trolling mode, and when we say there are a ton of memes, it’s because there are a ton of memes. It makes sense given the result of the match and the manager’s overall tenure.

There are some memes that have the Portuguese playing video games or even going as far as making a joint. Others have him fixing a computer set up, which adds to the insanity of the situation.

There was even one meme where they used AI to depict Amorim taking care of the hair of Frank Ilett, the Manchester United supporter who went viral as he chose to not cut it until they win five games in a row.

There was even one meme where it had the manager looking at Antony, who is a player that is a part of the infamous “Bomb Squad”, which are all the footballers that Amorim has discarded.

Others are more direct and just simply add a line that says “Me pretending to be busy at work”, which is a very clear joke regarding how Amorim is struggling so much with the Red Devils.

The memes didn’t seem to end as a lot of people were thriving regarding this now-infamous image.

Some of the memes have Amorim playing the Magic The Gathering card game, playing as a DJ, and even as an sculptor thanks to the usage of AI. It highlights the sheer insanity of the contrast of this moment of his and the match against League Two side Grimsby town, which is saying a lot.

Some of the memes even have him working at McDonald’s as a joke of him getting sacked by Manchester United in the near future. While there have been reports that the board is still backing him, there is a strong argument to be made that he is bound to get sacked if the team’s form doesn’t improve.

It is definitely dire for Manchester United at the moment. After having finished 15th last season in the Premier League and having lost the Europa League final to Tottenham, it seems that was all she wrote for Amorim. However, the board chose to kept him and backed him with the signings of Sesko, Mbeumo, and Cunha. That seemed like a step in the right direction, but three games in, they haven’t won yet and are already eliminated from the Carabao Cup.
Here is hoping that Manchester United can turn it around, with or without Amorim.
