Matchday 9 of the English Premier League saw some heavy upsets taking place as newly promoted Sunderland defeated World Champions Chelsea, in historic fashion. The Black Cats’ immense defensive solidarity has put them at an astonishing fourth position, tied on points with Tottenham Hotspur, on 17 points.
Daniel Ballard was the standout figure at the heart of Sunderland’s five-man defence, anchoring their low block with composure and strength, making 7 clearances across 90 minutes, the most by any player on the pitch that day. This was Sunderland’s first victory at Stamford Bridge in almost a decade with the 26 year-old putting up a performance worth remembering.

This wasn’t the first time the former Gunner put in a shift for his club as he scored the winning goal from a corner in stoppage time of extra time in the 24/25 EFL play-offs’ semi-final against Frank Lampard’s Coventry City to take the Black Cats to Wembley for the final, which they won in dramatic fashion with a stoppage-time goal, a match where the Northern Irish centre-back again made crucial recoveries.
FANS’ REACTION
Elated fans took to Twitter to praise his performance against the very team he ousted in that match, “Ballard’s an absolute rock”, said one fan on Twitter. His solid performance against the Blues was praised by former Premier League centre-forward, Stephen Elliot.

The former Man City and Sunderland player took to Twitter by posting an AI generated GIF of Ballard turning into the fictional superhero, The Hulk, highlighting his powerful defensive display. The Irishman, currently managing Wexford FC in the Irish first division, received mixed replies to his tweet with some fans praising the funny side of it, whilst others spoke about being against using AI to generate visuals in any context. “Masterpiece”, said one fan on Twitter, while “Keep these AI videos for Facebook”, said one unamused fan.
DAN ‘THE HULK’ BALLARD
Regardless of what people’s views about the GIF are, Ballard’s performances this season have been nothing short of superb. Sunderland opened their Premier League account in style with a 3-0 win over West Ham at the Stadium of Light, where the ‘hulkish’ defender scored a goal and kept a clean sheet. Following this incredible form, Sunderland have only conceded 2 goals when Ballard was on the pitch, highlighting his importance to the team’s defensive solidarity.
During Sunderland’s visit to Old Trafford to face a rather struggling Manchester United, Ballard joined the action in the 37th minute, replacing forward Simon Adingra, after the visitors went 2-0 down with both goals coming before Ballard featured. He ended up making a whopping 16 clearances in the match and won the most duels in the match out of any player.
Even during their visit to Stamford Bridge saw Ballard, once again at the very heart of Sunderland’s five-men back line where he made 7 crucial clearances to keep his team in the match.
Love it or hate it, the AI visuals and people’s reactions cannot take away the strong defensive performances that have been put in by Ballard these past few months, which have made him an important piece of the puzzle for Sunderland.
