Virgil van Dijk Gets Interviewed By Ex-Opponent Who Once Scored Twice Against Him

Celtic, Champions League, Liverpool, Virgil van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk has had an extremely eventful couple of weeks both on and off the pitch. After facing criticism for subpar performances as Liverpool has had a torrid time as a defensive unit this season, leaking goals and losing games they should ideally be winning. The last two games have brought good fortune.

Liverpool has won the last two games in a row while keeping a clean sheet in both. After a convincing 2-0 win against Aston Villa, Liverpool followed it up with another convincing display, this time against Real Madrid.

The Merseyside club beat Real Madrid 1-0 in the Champions League game with a resolute display from the defence.

After the game, Van Dijk had a classy exchange with a new pundit whom he played against once upon a time.

Many fans weren’t able to recognize the new, mysterious guy interviewing Van Dijk, but his identity has finally been revealed.

The player was Michał Żyro, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers and Legia Warsaw forward. The Polish player retired in 2024 after constantly battling injuries since suffering a serious knee injury in 2016, shortly after signing with Wolves.

Since his retirement, Żyro has become a pundit/commentator as he works with Canal+ for the Ekstraklasa coverage team.

Żyro and Van Dijk shared a wholesome moment together as the footballer-turned-pundit put Van Dijk on the spot and told him that this is the second time they’re meeting, and if he remembers the first time they met several years ago.

To Van Dijk’s credit, he did remember their match, specifically the incredible atmosphere.

“I remember that match. The atmosphere was incredible. Everyone in the stands was dressed in white. Did you play there? And now you’re an expert? Nice to see you.”

Żyro, implying that Van Dijk has since become a world-class defender, was quick to remind him that he can claim that he scored twice against Van Dijk.

Van Dijk was loving the life-coming-full-circle interaction as he stated:

“So back then you scored two goals, and now you’re interviewing me.”

Żyro also brought up injuries affecting his career trajectory, stating that once he joined Wolves, he suffered a serious knee injury, and nothing was the same after that. Adding that he’s happy to be a pundit, and it is special to speak with Van Dijk.

Van Dijk was sympathetic and told Żyro to see the positives that, at least now, he’s doing something that he enjoys.

“I’m sorry to hear that, but it’s really a great pleasure to be able to talk with you now. As long as you are happy, that’s the most important thing.”

The match they’re referencing took place in the third qualification round of the 2014-15 Champions League.

In the first leg, Legia destroyed Van Dijk’s Celtic 4-1, with a brace from Radovic and goals from Michael Żyro and Jakub Kosecki.

The return fixture saw Legia beating Celtic 2-0 with goals from Żyro and Kucharczyk.

Żyro scored a peach as he raced beyond Van Dijk and Mikael Lustig before clinically finishing past the goalkeeper Fraser Forster to make it 5-1 on aggregate.

Despite the 6-1 aggregate win, the tie wasn’t done as Legia fielded an ineligible player (the suspended Bartosz Bereszynski). Even though Bereszynski only made a brief appearance off the bench, he was technically ineligible to play, so Celtic was given a 3-0 default win. As a result, Celtic progressed to the next round on away goals while Legia was eliminated.

Amazing to think that almost a decade later the two would meet again and in such different circumstances. Zyro’s interaction with Van Dijk was easily one of the best moments of the week and yet another reason why Football is called the beautiful game.
