Brazil in Red? Here’s Why Nike Scrapped Controversial Away Kit Design

The Brazilian football team has always been associated with the Yellow colour for their home jersey and the blue for their away jersey, barring a few instances in history when they have had white away kits.

Since the days of Pele, Zico, Romario, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo and Kaka and now the likes of Vinicius Jr, Raphinha and Richarlison, the Brazilian team have played their away games in blue kits.

There have been slight changes in the designs over the years, from blue with yellow trims or blue with white trims, but, in general, you don’t associate any colour other than blue with the Brazilian away kit.

However, this time Nike tried something different and innovative, making a red away kit.

Nike had initially come up with a red colored away jersey for the Brazilian National team, and some set of fans actually liked the idea of the kit. However, many others wanted the blue shade, as traditionally, Brazil’s away kits have always been blue and red would just not look like a Brazilian away kit.

But, Nike had to cancel the red jersey because of public and political outrage, as the red colour is associated with Brazil’s ruling Workers’ Party of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

According to News18.com, the CBF President, Samir Xaud, halted the production of the red jersey so that the National team’s kits could align with the colours of the national flag. “Blue, yellow, green and white are the colours of our flag, and these are the ones that must be used,” said Xaud.

How does new Brazil away kit for 2026 look like now

New leaks have now emerged that show Brazil will don an away kit in their traditional blue for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The Jordan Brazil 2026 World Cup away kit features a Royal Blue base with a bold, jagged graphic in multiple shades of blue across the front, incorporating thin vertical stripes.

The Jordan logo and detailing are in vibrant yellow, aqua panels are on the sides, and the collar interior features a graphic element reading “Vai Brasa” (“Go Brazil!”). This is the first time Nike and Jordan have collaborated to make the Brazilian team’s away kit.
