We’re no strangers to footballers crashing out in anger, whether it’s on their opponents or the referees. During Real Madrid’s recent visit to Girona, star striker Kylian Mbappe became the latest victim in failing to control his anger.
The French international lost his temper on the fourth official referee, Alejandro Clemente Ortuno, after Azzedine Ounahi opened the scoring for the hosts right before the first-half break. The 26 year-old went to the fourth official to enlighten him about a potential foul during the play which led to his team conceding a goal, but things got heated on the players’ side when the official seemed to ignore his calls.
“Why are you looking there when I’m talking to you?”, said the league’s top scorer to the referee bursting out in anger. Ortuno tried his best to calm the 2018 World Cup winner and de-escalate the situation but further his efforts were in vain. “Look at me when I talk to you!”, shouted the Frenchman.

Even rival fans were seen left surprised with many claiming this is the most angry they’ve seen the former PSG captain while on the pitch. Regardless, he was extremely lucky to have avoided having his name written in the referee’s book, having already done so twice this season. The outburst was a clear indication of dissent from the players’ side and was deserving of a yellow card. Questions have been raised regarding the France national team captain’s ego and demanding a better and more mature response to the situation.
Eagle-eyed fans have even pointed out the 26 year-old’s poor decision making after he nabbed a chance away from fellow teammate and Brazilian winger, Rodrygo, after a pass that was clearly meant for the Brazilian, who himself has been struggling for minutes under newly appointed head coach Xabi Alonso’s reign, was blindly taken by Mbappe which was ultimately shot wide, denying his team a late stoppage-time winner in the same match.

The issues created by him in the match against Girona might’ve cost his team the three points as the match went on to end in a 1-1 stalemate which marked a third consecutive draw in their league campaign. Having failed to capitalise in all of those matches allowed their bitter rivals and fellow title challengers, Barcelona, who are the reigning Spanish champions, to become the new league leaders with a 1-point gap.
The pair could potentially meet each other next in the final of the Supercopa De Espana, should the two overcome their semi-final challenges.
