Wilfred Nancy Becomes Celtic’s First Black Manager Since John Barnes

Celtic, John Barnes, Wilfried Nancy

On December 3rd 2025, Wilfried Nancy was appointed as the Celtic Manager who will replace interim manager Martin O’Neill who stepped in after Brendan Rogers resigned in early October. Nancy was the head coach of the MLS Side Columbus Crew with whom he enjoyed two silverwares, the MLS Cup in 2023 and the Leagues Cup in 2024. More importantly, Nancy is the first black manager to coach Celtic since John Barnes in 2000. The history with black managers in Celtic has created a sense of doubt as well as optimism among the Celtic fans.

The tenure of John Barnes at Celtic was a period of poor football and amid controversies, John Barnes was sacked mid season, 8 months into his appointment in February 2000. While the statistics suggest that the performance was not up to the expectations many factors accumulated to the sacking. It was Barnes’s first experience in managerial career. The leg injury sustained by Henrik Larsson derailed momentum leading to shakiness in their form and eventually Barnes lost the dressing room over differences in tactics and poor man management. Barnes sacking had little to do with racism but him not being to land any other job and a tenure of 8 months as a manager was much imbibed due to his skin colour on his perspective.

John Barnes on why he lost his job under an year at Celtic

Celtic do not seem to be a club with objections towards black managers as they are known very much for their egalitarian principles. They were one of the forerunners of equality when they appointed John Barnes as the manager in 1999 while Europe did not have countable black managers except for a few like Gullit at Chelsea. They are also known for their open mindedness when they hired Ange postecoglu from Australia thinking outside of the British/European circle. This is also a point of evidence for the appointment of Wilfried Nancy who manages in Major League Soccer, a league which is seen inferior in terms of competency to European leagues. The existence of no other Black manager in Celtic history is due to the timing, ecosystem and opportunity that prevailed and has nothing in relation with aversion to race.

Wilfried is known for his dominant, innovative possession based football twinned with positional discipline. He hails from a great school of knowledge having assisted Thierry Henry at Montreal from 2021 to 2022. He is acknowledged with great respect for his style of play in MLS with analysts and fans often accolading his style of play as ‘NancyBall’. Several fans feel that it is a great initiative by Celtic but the history of black manager in Celtic must not be a hindrance to his success at the club.
